fbhjr: (Bike Route)
Because of the rainy spring that lasted until August, then a heat wave, I haven't taken the bike out much this year.
I have walked all over the place. So, when I thought to ride the bike up to the Post Office today, I didn't think it would be a big deal.
But, as I learned, walking and biking use different muscles.
Now that the weather is cooler and sunny, I need to use the bike ones more often...

Today I got the bike out of the spare room, pumped up the tires and went for a ride.
I know I've had lots of time this year. I know I usually get it out in April.
But, I've had the time to walk places this year, so I haven't done the bike.
I forgot how different it is on the same roads. And, forgot how "interesting" it is to balance groceries on the handle bars while you pedal home. (Not a problem walking.)
But, I'm glad I got it out and will try to do some bike mixed in with the walk.
We'll see how it goes.

Wooo!

Allergies or no, I did the full route on the bike today...WITHOUT A COAT!
That's right 70F with a light wind. If only the plants weren't having sex it would have been perfect.

A bit more

Twice around the condo complex near me, so I'm up to 2 3/4 miles.
If I add a mile a week, I'll be up for [livejournal.com profile] evrgreen's route by late August...

I did my first bike ride of the year today after work. It is the shortest of the routes I came up with last fall at only 1 3/4 miles. And, I only went around once.
It makes me remember I'm 44 not 14. But, it's a good tired, right?
At least I was able to carry the bike up the stairs at the end.

The Ride

It was cold this morning. So, I put on the black armor, the black hat, made sure to wear gloves and went for a ride.
Despite all that, the folks I ran into seemed friendly. Everyone I encountered smiled, said hi, and wished me a good morning.
Not bad for a bike riding man in a black gambeson wearing a Russian army surplus hat pedaling around when it’s freezing.
Dodging the emergency training session in the junior high school parking lot was difficult as I also had to avoid riding through the football game.
But, dodging the birdwatchers near the electric company was more difficult. That made me go off the path.
I only stopped for the sad man walking his laundry around the parking lot. I did explain to him that in my building there was a laundry machine on the first floor, and I didn’t have to bring it to any “central point” as he had been told.
This did not seem to change his being sad.
Even with the cold, I’m still glad I bought the bike.
And, I am smart enough to start our going up hill so the trip back is easier.

I have to say, church seemed to drag on today. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just me as well.
In addition to the normal service, sermon and communion, they had both a movie and presentation on the upcoming CROP walk. I agree it is a good cause and such, but even the wife of the guy making the presentation was sitting in the back waving at him and telling him to wrap it up. And, the pastor skipped a hymn on purpose and cut out 2 verses of another, so obviously she thought it was going long too.
I had hoped to go to the beach with Nate today, but the weather was not up for it. I tried to go for a ride, but found cold rain wasn’t a good mix for it.
So, I watched the extended version of the Return of the King. It’s my least favorite of the three movies, but the only one I’ve got on DVD.
While that was on, I made wantons. They take forever, just like the movie. (Things taking a long time seem to be a theme today….)
The weather did clear up enough late in the day for a ride. So, I did have a nice ride even if not as long as yesterday.
So, a somewhat boring day, but not bad.
