Ouch

Today I decided to go to church for the first time since my wife moved back in with me.
Now there have been a few folk from church who have checked on me over the two months in question, told me how much I was missed and things like that. Given what’s been going on, that has been very nice.
But, I still didn’t want to spend a lot of social time there and have to explain everything that’s been going on and where things stood.
So, I waited until 10 minutes before the service to leave. Now, it’s only about 1/4 mile, so that would be plenty of time normally.
But, I got to my car and found it was dead again. I guess last night while unloading stuff from Mobile, one of the doors was again left ajar and the light drained it dead by morning.
I started to walk, but then said “I bought a bike! I can use that.”
So, I pedaled up the hill to the road, Down the hill and drifted the rest of the way to church. Although VERY cold, and a bit out of breath, I got there before service started.
The service went well. Although the organization level was as high (not) as always, it was still a nice service. In the hand shaking part, everyone said how nice it was to see me again and how missed I was. So, that was nice.
The drama team did a very funny play about being frazzeled for the holidays. And, one of the people in it who is supposed to be the frazzeled one kept getting calls on her phone during it, so was extra frazzeled. It turned out to be from one of the people watching who knows her and wanted it to be “authentic”. It was.
“I can’t talk to you now,” she said into the phone. “I’m too busy doing a play about being too busy to talk to people.”
Maybe you had to be there. Or, know the woman in question.

Anyhow, back to the pain.
I didn’t want to ride the bike back on the main road due to all the traffic. The side roads all have big hills. I road up the side hill as much as I could, then got off and pushed the bike up the rest of the way.
Most of the way to the top I said “I can pedal the rest of this.”
So, I got on the bike and pushed off.
The hill was so steep that I stopped a foot later, standing on the pedals trying to get it up the last section of hill.
Now bikes are stable because the spinning wheels act as gyroscopes. So, not spinning, on a hill, with a 275 pound person standing up on them is not stable.
I tipped over, landed poorly on my ankle. That’s when the bike landed on me and we both slid a ways down the steep drive way I was in front of.
I got up. My ankle hurt. I fixed the twisted bike seat and handle bars, then pushed it the rest of the way up the hill.
Although my leg still hurts where it hit the (very cold) pavement and then the bike hit it, my ankle actually got better pedaling the rest of the way home.
At least it was cold enough that no one was out in their yard to see it and laugh at me.
