Monday I’m going to start a new job with a totally new group of people I don’t know. I was tempted to print up little index cards with information about me. But, then I couldn’t think of what to tell folks.
I would let them know you are excited to be there (if not, fake it til you make it) and offhandedly mention that you have a long commute. Maybe others do as well, and you will have a common currency of long-commute sympathy.
Also, I would ask people what their favorite thing is about working there. It can get people to associate you with positive feelings and help you learn about whatever cool things there are to take advantage of.
You can wear a sign thing around your neck with name, favorite food, favorite color, weird hobby, etc :p
Eh, I don't know about the feasibility of that or an "about me" card. msmidge has some great ideas! Mentioning the commute is definitely a great idea, maybe you'd get lucky and be able to carpool with someone (you never know)
my immediate tongue-in-cheek answer is "CAUTION: I KNOW HOW TO USE A SWORD AND EAT FIRE" but the commute thing is *way* more useful. not sure about the sign idea, but shared pain (driving in MA) and joy (hobbies) is usually an entre'.
Tell them that you and your wife lead a sword troupe and that the 2 of you did a demo in Germany. That you are a fan of Dr Who (it's more main stream now) and Star Wars. How much you enjoy making/designing things. That you like photo journaling.

tech & sci fi nerdy interests?
....Oh, maybe food things and mention your food allergy, might help out with company outings or lunches?
I dunno, don't want to give out too much info too quickly

Date: 2025-06-13 01:16 am (UTC)You've given # number of performances in # states and at least one foreign country (that I can remember off the top of my head).
You've forged your own sword.
You've run your own renaissance faire.
You've stepped foot on all seven continents.
You've written your own comic books.
You like to take photos of benches in museums.
And you've been happily married to the same woman for 30+ years.
