I dreamed I was driving home and decided to take a short cut down a small
dirt road.
As I drove down it two kids sharing one bicycle rode out into my path.
I hit the brakes, but they were coming right at me. I was very slow, but
not quite stopped when we hit.
Their bike bounced back about five feet (1.5 meters) and tipped to the side.
The two kids fell off an started crying.

I got out of my car and went over to them. Both boys looked to be around
10 years old and pointed to the house on the side of the road. So, I led
them and carried the bike over there.
A man came out of the house.
“Come in so we can talk about what happened,” he said.
I followed him into the house. He pointed at a chair in the living room
and I sat down. The whole family was there in the room with me, at least 8
or so people of all ages.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I did my best to stop in time, but they came right
out into the road and headed straight towards me.”
“I’m sure you did your best,” the man said. “So, how are you going to pay
for the door?”
“What door?” I asked.
“The front door,” he said, pointing to the front door of the house.
I went over and looked at it. It seemed fine.
“What’s wrong with the door?” I asked.
“When you hit the kids with your car they flew through the air and hit the
door, breaking it,” he said.
“No, that isn’t what happened,” I said. “We hit each other at a very slow
speed. They bounced off, tipped over and started to cry. No flying
through the air happened.”
“We didn’t cry!” one of the two boys shouted.
“Bump, tip, cry,” I repeated. “No flying.”

“And, there are the medical bills to consider,” the man said. “Who knows
how much they’ll be?”
“Right,” I said, standing up. “Let’s call the police right now and have
them examine the accident scene while it is still fresh in everyone’s
memory.”
I pulled out my phone and hit 911.
“I don’t think we need to do that!” the man said.
“What is the nature of the emergency?” a woman on the phone asked.
“I can’t afford to do it your way,” I told the man.
The family looked very angry.
Dream ends

One of the first thing that struck me about this dream was that for the
second night in a row I had a dream where I got out of my car and walked away
from it while it was still running.
In neither dream do I return to the car.
Don’t know what that’s about.

The rest of the dream is fairly clear to me. I’ve never hit anyone on a
bike with my car.
But, the other day I was thinking about how I used to commute by bike to
work more than 30 years ago when I worked at the museum.
And, the road where it takes place is a road very close to the museum. I
drove past it just over a week ago on the way back from my haircut and was
thinking about how the road was in too bad condition to even ride a bike
over, much less drive.
Since I rode that bike to work all year long I also did in snow storms like
we’ve had lately.
I had been thinking just yesterday about a time a person hit me with their
car door and I fell off and flew into a snow bank. The guy who hit me with
the door complained I had dented it.
So, damaged doors, cars and flying through the air all come from recent
memory.
Although I was the person doing it, not some kid. (OK, the 19 year old me
that happened to I would think of as a kid now…)
What confuses me is walking away from the car while it is running.
Twice now…
