Looking forward
May. 8th, 2026 06:44 amA couple of times last weekend I was asked how much longer I’d keep doing this and/or how long Phoenix Swords would keep going.
I was 38 when we started it and can’t deny it’s harder doing it at 62 as it was then.
I have always used an example of one of the interpreters from the Royal Armories in Leeds as my answer to this. Back in 2000, when I was just getting into historical performance, I saw him and his group of interpreters when they visited the Higgins Armory Museum.
They did a fantastic fight between the four of them that I still remember and it is still impressive.
And, I say “well, if he could do that at his age, I should keep going…”
This week I looked into the matter and found that when he did that very impressive fight, he was actually 2 years younger than I am now…

So, saying that whole “at his age” thing doesn’t work as well.
Of course, he didn’t retire until he was 5 years older than I am now, so I can keep using him for a while.
But, I need to find older sword fighters to use at my reference.
