There are times I really love my home city. Sadly today it was as I was leaving it , but better than never.
As my wife dropped me off at the airport there was a big crowd of folks being left off.
We did the runaround to swap drivers and get my luggage, but were worried about blocking traffic so only exchanged a quick kiss.
I saw a state police man approaching and got ready to heave my suitcase away.
"You have time to give her a better kiss than that!" He said.
So, I did.
In the security line there was a couple in front of me very worried they would miss their plane.
"You should ask the security guy if you can cut to the front," I said, pointing to the TSA guy with the Mohawk in front.
They asked.
"Is it ok with all 50 people in front of you?" He asked.
It was. They went to the front of the line.
All that and my luggage was 3 pounds under the critical weight!

Home again?
May. 23rd, 2012 09:04 pmThere is a small but positive chance I will make my connecting flight and get home tonight.
All I need to do is cross the entire Philadelphia airport in 10 minutes or less.
I hope that flight is delayed and mine is not.

The danger of iPads
May. 26th, 2010 02:07 pmI'm trying to get some work done today and I keep looking over at that iPad, knowing it has 6 new episodes of Doctor Who on it I have yet to watch.
The iPod was never much danger. Sure, it did video, but on that screen it was hardly worth it. Certainly not worth it for a first viewing. But, I've owned TVs with a smaller screen then this iPad.
Must get work done. Not watch Dr. Who...

The first of the new parts for the machine I’ve been working on for the last 6 months are starting to come in. These are only the first preliminary test parts to see if our concepts will even work. IF they do, we’ll expand it to the whole machine. If not we’ll come up with some thing new.
What really amazes me is the sterolithography parts. (I’ve used them for years, so it isn’t anything new. The first time I saw parts made this way was back in 1989.)
These are parts made by taking my computer file and running it through a 3D printer that creates what was in the file without any machining, molding, casting or other process.
So, I document what I imagine on the computer, and these parts are made directly from that.
If they weren’t $100 a piece, I’d probably be tempted to have a lot more of the things I think about done this way.

My allergies have been really bad the last few days. The pollen level is
actually lower then it was a couple of weeks ago, but still in the orange
to red level on the charts.
I think it is more that the trees going now are the ones to which I am the
most allergic. (Maple, Oak, and the birch trees with the devil behind
them…)
I’m not sure if the temperature swinging between summer hot and under
freezing is making it worse or better. But, it doesn’t seem to be slowing
the trees down…

Fucking FedEx, continued
May. 5th, 2010 06:24 pmApple stepped up and shipped me a replacement part for the one FedEx gave
to the wrong guy two weeks ago. They turned the replacement over to FedEx
last Thursday.
I checked the tracking number they gave me and it said it would be here
Monday.
Monday it said Tuesday.
Tuesday it said today.
Today it said “Wednesday, May 5th before 4:30PM”
I checked periodically through the day and it continued to say that up
until 4:29.
At 4:30, the predicted delivery time went blank and a warning saying “there
may be service interruptions or delays in the Nashville TN area due to
flooding.”
OK. I can’t blame them for that.
But, their tracking number said it had gotten as far as Newark, NJ by 2
this morning.
So, if it is in Newark, I don’t see what Nashville has to do with it. Yes,
they both begin with N. That’s about it.
Maybe they’re trying to say “when getting it from Newark the 120 miles
north east to where you were, we took it 400 miles south west on the way,
and lost it in a flood.”
I hope that’s not what they’re trying to say as it would really annoy me if
it is.
But, at this point they don’t have a lot of my trust…

I should not be surprised...
May. 5th, 2010 01:18 pm4.75 days after getting my iPad I’ve hit the wall for Cellular modem use on
a 30 day plan.
The good news is that the “unlimited” plan isn’t too much more, and I am
upgrading.
I was pretty sure I would need the big plan anyhow. I’m too much of a data
hog from the basic plan. But, it was worth trying.
