THERE IS NO GOING BACK!

A few weeks ago we had some sort of internet problem. Our internet is provided by the town cable company. So, when something goes wrong you’ve got to contact the town about it and it can be tricky.
Last time this happened we had to upgrade our modem and that was like something out of Twin Peaks: http://www.fbhjr.livejournal.com/605444.html
While I was on the phone with the help desk person, he said “I see you have the slowest internet plan we have. We don’t even offer than one any more. For $10 more you could get something that is nominally 7 times faster.”
“Cool, how do I do that?” I asked.
“You’ve got to call the main office during business hours.”
So a couple of days later, I called.
“If you upgrade, you’ll need a new modem,” the woman told me.
“Will I have to bring the old one to a dwarf that lives behind a generator next to a playground?” I asked.
“Why would you have to do that?”
“I wondered that too…”
“Bring it to the town hall between 7:30 AM and 5 PM.”
“Hmmm. Those are my normal work hours. But, I’ll see if my wife can do it.”
“Understand, if you take the new modem, you can’t go back.”
“Do people want to go back to slow internet?”
“I’m just explaining the conditions.”
The next morning my wife went to town hall with the old modem.
“THERE’S NO GOING BACK!” the woman in the office insisted.
“I like fast internet,” my wife said.
“Just so you understand, you can NOT switch back!”
My wife agreed.
Our internet is faster.
It’s only really noticeable when downloading movies or TV shows.
Webpages are still about the same.
Don’t plan to go back…

Date: 2017-03-22 10:45 am (UTC)Since I was stuck at home during the blizzard, and I didn't want to go searching and buy a slightly newer OS that would still be 2 versions older than the current, I caved and downloaded Sierra.
Once the computer reset et. al., everything seems to run "smoother" (not necessarily "faster"), and things like Hotmail does not crash every 5 seconds like it used to. I also noticed that my WiFi works 100x better than it used to, now I don't have to fight with it to get it to recognize our home network or the free network at my studio. (as the old way it would search for networks for a long time, and choosing the lest potent, least secure, open/no password network and automatically switch to that, and refuse to connect to our network, not recognize the password, etc. So it'd take me 10-15 minutes just to get online)
THERE IS NO GOING BACK.
Although I am always concerned with older software and files that I may not be able to access at all anymore.
Still need to find a way to extract old (art sales records) files from my now ancient G5. :/

Date: 2017-03-22 01:16 pm (UTC)Twice when shopping in London I've been warned 'you can't return this item' when purchasing something. As I rarely buy anything I don't really want I wondered why this was stressed so forcefully
