Two days before I got married, my wife and a friend of ours picked up my sister at the airport and headed to my friend Dave’s house.
We couldn’t move into our new apartment yet, and had to get out of the old before the end of the month. So, for about 3 days, we had no place to live. Two of those nights were spent at the hotel near where we got married, the first on Dave’s floor. (Yes, my sister and I both opted to stay on Dave’s floor rather than at my parents house 40 miles away...)

Anyhow, as we went along the highway, I saw something I never expected to see again.
“Shoes!” I shouted to the other folk in the car.
“What?” they asked.
I just pointed.
All three lanes of 495 were covered with shoes. We couldn’t help but drive over them as they covered everything. For about 200 feet, we drove over women’s shoes as the other cars on the highway flung them up at us.
At the end of the shoe cover was a pickup truck with an empty box tipped over towards the back. Two very sad looking men stood next to it looking out over the road.
I did not stop. I never saw anything about it on the news.
Yet, I’ve remained convinced that those two men were thinking “how do I explain to her what happened to her shoes?”

Now, it has happened again.
15 years later, there are again shoes on the highway.
Nobody knows why...

So sad to think of all of those shoes committing suicide in one great leap towards 'freedom' like lemmings from the back of some unwitting truck.

sad.
