fbhjr: (Hat of doom!)
[personal profile] fbhjr

One of the new things we wanted to try in our fire shows this year was a fire hat. My wife made one up out of wire that was twisted sort of like ram’s horns on either side of my head.
She put wick on the curls. We put fuel on the wick. I put it all on my head. The flame was applied.
[livejournal.com profile] blue_micha took a picture of it with her phone.
The “cape” I’m wearing is a fire proof blanket so dripping fuel wouldn’t set my shirt or me on fire.

I think the picture looks really cool. I don’t know if that’s really what it looked like as my face was being cooked by the gobs of flame to either side of my head and I couldn’t really be objective about it. I took it for as long as I could, then dumped the hat and we put it out.

It’s a good idea. But, we either need bigger horns that hold it farther away, less flame, or something else to stop me from being flame broiled.
I’m sure my wife will figure out a way to get it done.

Yeah, it does look like that, doesn't it?
It isn't how I thought it would look...
I thought the curls would be more visible. But, they aren't on the vertical holders when they flame up, so I guess I should be surprised...

you may need a Spanish conquistador type helm to kil the radiant heat a bit, can be done but it's a pain in the ass unless you cunningly avoid compound curves. I'm past master at making single plane curves look compound to an untrained eye..:)

I so need to not be in AU sometimes... I'd have you guys clanking around cheerfully inside a week or two, comfortably on fire everywhere...:)

Yeah, I thought of modifying one of the helms we have for it.
I'm just worried it will conduct the heat in...

y'just have to worry about sustained radiant heat, a thick pad of wool felt would help a great deal, a wet pad of wool felt, even better

I had on a helm arming cap at the time. You can't see it, but that's why my hair didn't burn.

Any idea involving an impressive hat must, by definition, be a good one....

Yeah, that doesn't stop bashers from saying differently.
