My wife and I went to the Revels tonight. We’ve gone every year for some time now, and always have a good time. But, this year seems above average, even for a consistently good show. They had a “guest” singing group of 6 women that was fantastic. (It probably would have been better still if I could understand the language of their songs, but that doesn’t detract from a good performance.)
And, they had a dance group that was just stunning. There were points when I swear they must have been levitating to do what they did.
The theme every year is winter solstice celebrations from a different part of the world. So, it made it extra special to be there on the night of the solstice.
So, a really good time.

The office Christmas party last night, no so much. Why letting people drink at the office seemed like a good idea, I don’t know. Even the CFO said to me “I smell liability in the air.” I left early, so as far as I know nothing bad happened. At least nothing they talked about today.
Today I forgot my gift for the Yankee Swap. That made me quite sad as I had really looked forward to making sure “Project Management for Dummies” ended up in the right hands. But, that’s what I get for trying to be sarcastic.
We did get a bonus. Not much, but anything is better than nothing. And, for reasons not clear to me, they gave out “Red Sox Champion” shirts. I’d rather have had a company shirt. But, that’s me.
Now I get 4 days off. Monday is going to be hectic with driving my mother in law back and forth across MA. But, at least well get to see her this holiday.

Comedy

Holly and I went in to the Improv Boston sketch comedy class graduation
program last night. It was a lot of fun.
Sadly the trip in suffered somewhat because Cambridge is one of the few
places my direction sense doesn’t work. (I suspect because it is the
birthplace of my mother. When she disowned me, her birth city appears to
have as well.)
The directions to the theater say “come out of the T station and go north”.
Normally that’s exactly the kind of thing I like to have.
But, we got to the street, and I couldn’t tell which way was north. I
guess. I was sure I was wrong, so we turned around. We went a block, I
was more sure I was wrong, and went back the first way. It turned out the
first was right.
As it had been almost 60 in the morning, I didn’t wear my hat. So, my ears
got pretty cold walking the 5 blocks to the theater. But, we did find it
OK.
There was a very good sandwich shop next to it where we had a very good
dinner.
The show was good. My favorite bit wasn’t even a sketch but an “ad” on
between them about the drunken ren faire volunteer guy. I’m told Oakenguy
wrote it, I’m not surprised.
My second favorite was about a competitive gift giving “shoot out” in the
old west.
We did get back late. That’s the only down side to going to these things.
And, I had to be at 7 for a call to China. But, I’m still glad we went.

Holly and I went to see the play at the West End Theater up in Gloucester last night. (http://www.thewestendtheater.com )
We both enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought they did a great job with only two (sort of) actors covering a whole range of people in the story.
I’d say the third person did well too, but then I’d have to admit I saw her. And, if I saw her, then I’d be cursed too. Since I don’t need that in my life right now, I’ll just say that all people did a great job.
I’ve only got two regrets about it:
First, the place was almost empty. Hopefully it was just the Sox game and they usually get more people. I felt bad about them doing the play for only 3 people. It did make it seem more appropriate. In the play they are supposed to be doing it in an empty theater. So, it made the lines like “it will be different when an audience fills this place” more appropriate then I would hope they normally are.
Second, it is hard for us to get there. We left right after work, stopped only to drive through a burger place for dinner, and still only just made it. Even without traffic on the way back it was an hour and a half.
But, this is much more my preference in live entertainment then music. Hopefully as Holly and I look to do more things together, we can do more things like this.
