Saturday adventures
May. 3rd, 2015 06:59 amAfter two weeks of cloudy days with rain, we had a nice Saturday.

Because of this, everyone came out on the roads. And, many drove badly.
Like, not pulling over for ambulances. Weaving motorcycles through heavy traffic. Yelling at people who did pull over for ambulances.
My wife was upset about this, so we went for lunch.

No matter what her aunt tells you on facebook, that is NOT my wife’s happy smile.
I did stop at the bookstore near the restaurant. I saw something I never expected to see again in my life. "New on vinyl".

Engine running for 20 minutes in a handicapped spot without the sticker and "lines, I don’t need no lines". At least the lot was empty on a Saturday.

The good day came to an end as we reached the campus of the university where my wife works.

They were holding one of their Gamelan concerts last night. It was the goodbye concert for the director who has been leading these there for the last 8 years.

Even the moon came out for it.

The leaves on the trees were doing their best to be there too.

Because the campus is on a hill, it was after sunset where we parked, but before sunset on some of the other buildings up the hill.

We got there early as it fills up quickly. And, it did.

It starts with a blessing.

And then lots of music and dance.

Someone lost a sword prop. But dancing barefoot meant they found it soon enough.

For the butterfly dance the director takes over the music personally. Not sure why.

The professor that runs the program also does a dance as an "old man". She does this every time.

I like the Barong dance.

It seemed very fond of the drums this year.

At the end of the dance it came and sat at my feet.

Is that a good thing when a guardian spirit comes and sits at your feet?
I’m thinking yes.
Then a second one came out. This has not happened before at the others we’ve attended. But, they’ve never sat at my feet before either.

It didn’t seem as fond of drums, actually kicking a few.

Then, it danced at the other one.

The first got up and joined it.

Then they had a big group sing.

The director’s wife danced for this part.

As folks are changing for the last dance the director talks about some of the history and culture of the dance. How long he talks and what he says is very dependent on how long people take to change.

Then the last big dance. They tell a story in mime that is amusing.

As it was their last performance they gave the director and his family going away presents.

As we came out we found some other, very loud, concert going on outside the building. There were about 6 people at that one.

I'm glad the concert went so well and there were so many fun things, and, Guardian Spirit! Hooray!
We very clearly saw the Fireworks going on at the campus. Not sure what was up with it but I doubted it was for the Gamelan teacher.
But I thought that anyway and wish them the best.
