GCRF, getting home
Mar. 12th, 2015 08:34 pmAfter the long drive down, two days of shows and having a cold, I needed to get up at 4AM the day of our 24 hour drive home to take Tom to the airport.
My body cooperated with this by waking up at 2:30 and not going back to sleep.
At least it was nice out.

The very cheap hotel we were in seemed quite worried we were going to steal from it.
As my car wasn’t there when my wife checked us in, I’m not sure how they could tell the police about it. And, the idea the police would chase us down for towels seems unlikely to me…

Maybe it is because the hotel is cursed to lose things.
Before taking Tom to the airport he came to our room in a panic. He couldn’t find his wallet. He needed his ID to fly home and to drive from there.
He had "searched his whole room twice" so it must be in our room from the meeting the night before.
I went over to his room with him. I took it out of his briefcase where he normally puts it and handed it to him.
When I got back from the airport, everyone was waiting by the van. Jose had lost the keys. The 9 remaining people joined in the search of the ground, the hotel and the three hotel rooms.
Finally we returned to his room where he had searched "100% at least three times!"
I picked up his boots while he told me not to waste my time. The keys feel out.
"Asshole," I said and walked out to unlock the van.
"Ooops," Jose said.
Anyhow, with

The van passed us and headed off fast.

I called them to remind them they needed the next exit or would go back to Jacksonville. They hit their brakes and got behind us.
My car went to visit the folks who make the freezers for me in Georgia. The other car got breakfast.

We had lots of snacks.

I got to drive through rural Georgia. There was one town that was less than a mile long and had 7 churches…

This orange car got more discussion than anything else on our trip.

In the middle of the night we stopped in Virginia. A car of young women seemed intent on capturing feral cats at the rest area. This seemed like the potential for a horror movie, so we drove on.

We got to New York City just as the temperature dropped below freezing. Fast. One side of the bridge was 2 degrees above. The other 2 below.

We slipped on some black ice and I decided someone else should drive while I rested a bit.

So I rested in the back while dawn arrived in Connecticut.

The rest areas were closed so

This resulted in our getting a bit locationally confused as you couldn’t get back on the highway where we got off.
My wife had just reached home so located my phone’s GPS signal and gave us some advice.
A short time later we were home. (OK, 2 hours…)
My wife and I unpacked the van at storage and then headed over to O’Connor’s restaurant, our favorite.
"Did you two just drive back from Florida?" the owner asked us as we walked in.
"Being able to come here for lunch after the drive is what gets us through," I replied.
"Welcome home," he said and brought us to a table.
We each ordered two meals and brought one home.
Never mind getting to eat like kings, I’ll take eating like Hobbits any day.
It’s good to be home.

So, it's true what they say: You can walk away from an incident and laugh about it later, when at the time it seems like doom is upon you.
