My town is currently leading the snow fall amounts with 18"/48cm, with hours left in the storm. The wind is up to 60mph/100kph and more closer to the coast.
The band of really heavy snow follows a line from where I live to where I work. But, the thunder and lightning is still south of us in the storm.

I'm glad I'm working from home today.

Working from home sounds like the safest thing you can do at the moment. I can't imagine what that kind of weather is like, and how cold... BRRR!

It is very rare for us to lose our power for any length of time. Our apartment complex is fed by underground cables and we're less than a mile from the town's emergency generator.
It will go off for short times. But, more than about 15 minutes has only happened once in the 21 years we've lived here. And, that was when a car drove over the distribution transformer and exploded.
Not saying that can't happen again, especially in the snow. But, hopefully not.

A car exploded! Did the wire cause it or was it just the car had some weird malfunction? Was anyone hurt (I hope not)? Wow.

We live near an intersection that people often disregard the red light.
I didn't see the accident in question. I only heard the squeal of brakes, heard a crash noise followed by a very large explosion and the lights went dark.
When I walked out to the road a car had been rolling down the hill sideways on fire.

I think it ran the light, got hit, went into the transformer and they both exploded sending the car down the hill rolling. But, that's just what I got from the way it looked, I only heard it happen.
Transformers are usually full of oil. The car must have been going fast to have rolled so far. I can see that combination causing combustion.

They took at least one person away in an ambulance. i don't know what became of them. But, I doubt it was minor injuries given what happened.

That all must be about 15 years ago now...
Funny to think of it being that long ago.

I'm not normally given the option. But, when they declare a state of emergency and it is illegal to drive unless you are an emergency responder, my boss lets me work from home...
