A nice day out in the Autumn
Sep. 27th, 2014 08:58 pmIt was a beautiful fall day, but quite warm. (80F/25C)
Although I probably should have spent some time catching up with my work. I didn’t. I did spend an hour yesterday looking for a reference book I need to do some spring calculations, so I will count that towards work. Right?
Anyhow, my wife and I hopped in my car and took off through the nice fall day.

We went to Harvard. The town, not the university.

We went to the Fruitlands museum: http://www.fruitlands.org

It was one of the places where Louisa May Alcott lived before she wrote the "Little Women" books. So, there are some references to that. There is also some Native American stuff, some Shaker stuff and general history stuff.
The thing I like best about the place is the view. You can see a lot of mountains from there.
But, my wife wanted to go there for the craft fair they were having. A lot of other people had the same idea.

My wife got some things at the craft faire, then we decided to explore the rest of the museum.
We knew we were going to eat lunch there and there was a long line for the restaurant. So, we put in our name, accepted the 90 minute wait, and told them to call us when they were ready and we’d come back to the restaurant. They were OK with that.
The museum is along the side of the hill. So, we started walking down it.

It is a somewhat weird collection of stuff. Due to strong ties to the Shakers there is some anti-drinking stuff from the 1800’s.

Some Native American statues and reproductions. They have some stuff they claim is original as well, but even they admit they can’t trace it back past the 1800’s.

I liked the long house.

I did like the map of the tribes that had been in the area before my family got here.

Some of their plants are quite tall.

At the bottom of the hill is the Farm house where the Alcotts used to live.

I liked the grape "tunnel" in front. It smelled like a newly opened bottle of grape juice.

But, we couldn’t stand in the grapes all day and went into the house.

While we were examining that kitchen, the restaurant at the top of the hill called and said our table was ready.

It was then we realized we should have gone straight down to the bottom and meandered up rather than meander down and have to make a quick clime to the top.

Ah well, live and learn.
The restaurant had good food and the great view I liked.

But, the service was painfully slow. We each had a sandwich. It took us an hour and a half. And, not because we ate slow.
But, they did bring me cold drinks. That was good after climbing the hill in weather I consider hot.

And, their tables had an interesting way of holding my sunglasses.

We had thought about going to a second museum not too far from there, but lunch took so long we decided just to go home. But, given how nice the day was, we decided to take back roads home.

That meant walking all the way back to the car first.

But, soon we were going through little roads in the forest.

We went sat the reservoir too.

Our town is having its fall festival this weekend. They’re doing a "scarecrow" contest on the town green. It looks cool, but I’m still skipping the parade tomorrow.
