We did have some sunny days this week.

Today we were supposed to get a big storm, so I got up early and tried to beat it.

And, I did beat it. Mostly.

As the morning progressed, the snow got fairly heavy.

It was coming down about 2”/5cm an hour.

It did not take long to cover my little car.

I left after my 9 hours there and the snow was higher than the bottom of my car door.

The roads on the way home were not great.

And, there were some folks who got stuck.

It was very windy and the snow was really blowing around quite a bit.

It is nice that getting home about 4 in the afternoon it is still light.
Spring is coming.
Yeah.
Sure.

I also got a case for our new, long lead time, swords.

We don’t want to just throw them in the bag with the others.

On the Wales class, I booked the plane tickets today. Now I just have to work out with [livejournal.com profile] cosmicirony what else we’re going to see while we’re there.
You put ”historic sites” into a search engine for Wales and you don’t lack for choices.
We just have to prioritize…

"Visit something ancestral?"
That's what [livejournal.com profile] cosmicirony is going to do. As it is near Stonehenge, I'm going to tag along and go to the henge.
To the best of my knowledge, we won't be in the area where any of my family lived. As far as I know they were all over near London. We will change planes in Ireland, but even that is the wrong part for where my family comes from...

i am sorry you won't be near any place that would be considered familial.

I'm not. I have only the vaguest interest in that. It's been 400 years after all. I haven't even managed to get to my father's grave in my Vermont ancestral homeland in 8 years.
And that's only a 4 hour drive.

Wales is pretty cool ... loads of HUGE castles there, though I've only seen the most famous ones like Conwy ... Have to go back there one day - it's been ... ages ...

I've been to Ireland before, but not Wales. So, it will all be new to me.
I do plan to stop at Torchwood in Cardiff. My wife wants me to take a picture of that.
And, there is the Doctor Who exhibit right there too...

Nifty ... that's one reason I'd like to go back to Cardiff - to see the Millenium Centre.
And I saw the DW exhibition in London 3 years ago ... it was great!

The snow looks so pretty with the blue sky - but looks so cold and dangerous with the storm blowing in. Do you keep things in your car to dig it out of the snow as needed? Do you have to put on special tyres? Here if you drive to the snow you have to have chains on your wheels .. only because we don't have special winter tyres.

I don't keep a shovel in the car. I probably should in case I get stuck. But, there is one at home and one at work. Between those I do OK

You're not allowed to have studded tyres or chains on them in the state where I live. You can get them with deeper treads for a better grip.
For my very small car I don't bother. It doesn't have enough weight (even with me in it) for it to make a big difference.

You're not allowed to have chains? But wouldn't that make it safer for everyone?

It damages the roads.
So, they plow the roads and put down salt and sand so chains and studded tyres are not needed.
Or, that's the theory...

Where will you be in Wales? I could maybe offer some recommendations if you'll be in north Wales.

And what does "new, long lead time, swords" mean? S:

South to central Wales I'm afraid. We're going to fly into Cardiff and drive about 2 hours north.

The swords are the ones I ordered last July, was told to expect in September and they got here 2 weeks ago.

I love looking at snow pictures but can imagine how much you guys must dislike it. Is it hard to drive in the snow?

If you know what you're doing it isn't too bad.
But, lots of people don't know what they're doing. Or think that 4 wheel drive means they have 4 wheel stop, and they don't.

Many, many years ago when I was old enough to drive, my father waited until we had a big snow storm before he gave me a lesson.
"If you learn to drive in this you'll do fine all year long," he told me.
And, he was right.

That's sound advice. My Dad is of the belief that driving tests should be done under different conditions (in the wet etc.)

Of course, we don't get snow unless you drive to the high country and in that instance you're usually told to drive with chains on or at least in the car.

They do that in the mountains here too.
But, most places won't let you drive on ordinary roads with them.
