We went to see Stardust last night. It’s an OK movie. I think they could
have trimmed a bunch out without any harm to the plot.
But, I thought the basics of the story were pretty good.

It’s good to be able to do things together with Holly. To rebuild good
times together, even in fairly mundane ways like going to a movie.

It is difficult for me. I’m an engineer. I want to fix the problem. But,
I don’t have any specifications to work with.

It’s like when a sales person comes to me and says “the customer didn’t
like your last product. I need you to redesign it so it’s better.”
“What didn’t they like about it?”
“What you designed. Now make it better.”

It’s very similar now. I know things failed. I know things have to
change. But, I’m only guessing what to change, and how.
I know there aren’t detailed specifications on what to change.
But, I feel like I’m completely in the dark flailing about. Sometimes I
get something right, sometimes I knock something over.

I think I get that.

Maybe it's more like the current product no longer fits the target market. Instead of patching it or modifying it, you have to start from scratch. Market research as it were. Once you know and understand the current situation and needs then you figure out how and if you can fashion something that will be successful.

Some things can not be fixed.

But they can be re-invented.

Indeed.
That is what I'm hoping to do.

When I first started at my current company, they asked me to fix the problems with our top of the line product. I did it by totally changing the guts of the unit. It looks exactly the same on the outside. People can't tell which version they are looking at. But, it goes together in a totally different way.

The difference is, I was told more than 200% more resistant to bending. Assembly time of less than 10 min. Cost within 10% of the current system.

Specs in hand, I made the changes. The product is now more than 50% of the company's income. (It was 20% when I started.)

The problem is "better" and "different" are enough for me to go on.
