Going over my records, I find that every car that I ever was involved in
buying was either bought in May or June.  (Don’t tell me you’re surprised I
have records of that.)

So, what’s this say about this new one I’m getting in March?

I’m not counting the Ford my wife bought from her mother, or the Subaru she
later inherited from her mother.  I am counting the coupe that was my
wife’s because I was on the loan when we bought it and I’ve been driving it
for the last two years.

But, every other car I have ever considered mine has come to me in May or
June except this new one I’m getting Saturday.

The cars have been:
1)    The old station wagon my parents didn’t give me: My mother had an old
Ford Fairmont station wagon.  A bus hit another car that flew through the
air and landed on top of the wagon.  My mother was not in it at the time.
But, when she got it repaired she said she would give it to me as a college
graduation present.  And, in May of 1985, she gave me the keys if not the
registration or title.  Six months later when I refused to stop dating my
(now) wife, my parents took it back and sold it to someone else.
2)    Chevy Cavalier: This was my first new car that I bought in May 1986 when
I got my first full time engineering job.  It was not a very good car and
saw a lot of abuse.  When I worked at the iron foundry it was hit by the
forklift on more than one occasion.  (No, I don’t think it was an accident
any of the times.)  It developed a crack in the block that would leak oil
if it got above a certain temperature.  As I was driving down from NH each
weekend, it almost always got to that temperature and the right side of the
car was black with oil.  At about 125,000 miles one of the valves on the
motor broke loose and fell into the piston destroying the engine and I
scrapped it.
3)    Saturn SL1: I really liked this Saturn we got in May 2003 and I think it
may be my favorite of all of these cars.  I had it for about 150,000 miles
before it was rear ended getting off the Mass Pike and totaled.
4)    Saturn SC2: Bought in June 1995, this is the car I’m still driving
today.  It was my wife’s car until 2 years ago when she inherited the
Subaru from her mother.  It is a good car that has gone through a lot with
us.
5)    Saturn SL2: When the SL1 was totaled in June of 1998, I got this used
Saturn to replace it.  Sadly on Father’s day 2001 I tried to drive through
a puddle in a bad rain storm.  It flooded the engine and it had to be
replaced.  The replacement was horrible and for a year it cost me $500 or
more in repair eac month.  Finally, I had enough and traded it in.
6)    Saturn SW2: I got this wagon in June 2002 to replace the horrible SL2
with the bad engine.  It already had 77,000 miles on it when I got it and I
ran it up to about 250,000 before giving it away and taking over my wife’s
SC2.

So, now I’ll be getting a car that isn’t acquired in May or June.
That seems strange to me.

It feels like May here. Does that count?

My parents, too "gave" me a car to use to drive to college... but not the title etc.

So when I married J and moved out here, my mother had a car she couldn't even drive (she doesn't drive stick). Heh.

And boy, was she pissed off about that. But hey- not my car, not my problem.

Ah, those supposed GIFTS.
