What base should I count in?
Nov. 9th, 2011 08:20 amToday I turn 48. The age my father was when I was born. Only one year shy
of the age his father was when he died. But, a full 37 years shy of when
my father died.
From a math standpoint I like 48. It has move divisors that any age I have
obtained before. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24 & 48. That’s the most until
60 and the first time I’ve reached double digits with whole factors.
So, I guess it turns out that Mrs Bellisimo, my 4th grade teacher, was
right. Some day I would need to be able to calculate whole factors of
numbers.
How else could I post to LJ about it?
OK, that probably wouldn’t have impressed me 39 years ago when I was
sitting in her class. But, I was not a big fan of her, so I should give
credit where credit is due.
I was very happy to wake up to balloons today. I am a very big fan of
balloons.
And, my wife bought some before this and had them floating in the living
room for when I got up this morning. (We have agreed to forget that I
found them last night when looking for other stuff to pack in the car for
the show this weekend. But, being surprised and happy a few hours early
does not change the surprised and happy.)
The only bad thing so far is that the registry of motor vehicles has not
sent me my new license. I renewed it on line 2 ½ weeks ago and they sent
me an email saying “keep this with you in case we don’t get your new one
out to you in time.” I’m not sure how that will go over at the Avis
counter on Friday.
The other big question is: do I have to give my age in base 10?
In base 12, I’m 40. In base 16, I’m 30. In base 24, I’m 20.
OK, the 20 is a bit much.
I think I’ll avoid the base 4 of 300 or the base 2 of 110,000.

Date: 2011-11-09 03:26 pm (UTC)Personally, I like base-16. Most likely because that is what I work in so much of the time with all my geeky computer stuff. So, declare today as "Hexadecimal Day" and proclaim yourself as "30"!
