Performing for 40 years
Oct. 27th, 2011 02:06 pmAt some point around now I’ve been performing in public for 40 years.
I know, I know, I should be sure as to when. But, I’m not.
I know it was before my birthday, but not a lot. So, somewhere in this
part of the year back in 1971.
I remember my first public performance fairly well. It was the going away
party for my 3rd grade teacher. She was my favorite teacher up unto that
point, but she was getting married and was leaving her job because of that.
(It didn’t make sense to me then, it doesn’t make sense to me now, but
that’s what I was told back in 1971.)
I had been taking violin lessons for all of two months at that point, but
was told I had to play a song at her party in front of the whole school.
I was on the Suzuki method, so I’m sure it was “Twinkle, twinkle, little
star” as that is the starting song for that method.
I was very scared. But, she was my favorite teacher and she had asked me
to play for her.
After that I did 6 more years with the violin. I performed in the schools
production of the HMS Pinafore. I sang in the town’s bicentennial concert.
Acted some in college. Did planetarium, animal and astronomy shows at a
local science museum.
Finally took up sword fighting for the public with several entertainment
groups and a museum.
Now, I only do it with our own sword group, but still.
I haven’t forgotten that first time in that packed classroom all those
years ago.
