The kindness of strange children
Sep. 30th, 2011 04:07 pmI went out to Whole Foods for lunch today. (Yes, it’s Friday not Thursday.
I was busy yesterday. I know I usually go Thursday. Even my boss came out
of his office when I got back and said “what’s going on! It isn’t
Thursday!” But, I digress…)
As I walked into the store, I took off my sun glasses and put them in my
pocket. I was talking with my wife on the phone, holding the basket and
picking up food.
Over all of that, and the noise of the store, I thought I heard something
else.
I looked down and there was a very young girl standing behind me holding
out my sunglasses.
“I think you dropped these, sir,” she said. “You probably want them back.”
I doubt she was more than 5-6 years old, and not a parent was in sight.
So, I wondered about her going up to a strange man like that. But, I’m
very glad she did as I just bought those glasses.
“Thank you very much,” I told her. “I need these and I am happy to have
them back.”
“You’re welcome,” she said and scamper off through the produce department.
I feel bad I didn’t give her something as a reward as I am quite grateful.
But, I will just have to make sure I do some other kindness to someone else
when they need it.
