Vacations of the past

It’s been 15 years since out honeymoon and I always think about it this time of year. Since I didn’t have LJ back then, I didn’t make any entries about it.
Since I’ve been very nostalgic about it, I’m retroing these entries about it.
1996 was a rough year for us. My wife was sent to Indonesia for 6 weeks. I had the final fight with my parents where they declared me an embarrassment to the family and I disowned them. But, we managed to save up enough money to go on our honeymoon for our third wedding anniversary.
So, we ended up in Ireland.

We had taken an overnight flight there, so were very tired when we landed in Dublin. It was the first time I had been off of North America, but my wife had made the trips to the Orient and knew how to navigate customs and all.
We ended up with a very small car. I rented an automatic because I’m not good with a standard and didn’t want the extra mirroring to deal with on top of the roads. The person in front of me at the rental car booth mocked me for doing that. As we drove away, he was pushing his car back into it’s parking spot because he couldn’t get it into gear when the lever was on the other side.
We drove up to Drogheda. We couldn’t get into our B&B yet, so went to a local pub.
When we walked in the radio was playing “Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting”.
Once they heard our accent when we asked for tea, they shut off the radio and put on an Enya tape.
But, I will continue to think of Kung Fu Fighting as Irish music.
The B&B let us check in at 10 and take a 4 hour nap. Then, we set off for the historical sites of Newgrange and its associated sites, Knowth and Dowth.
The song that has the lyric “clear is the water that flows from the Boyne” isn’t kidding. It is a very nice clear river. I know because we went back and forth over it several times looking for the places. And, we crossed the site of a great battle many times.
We did eventually find our way.

I did try and film a lot.

I wonder what happened to those tapes over the last 15 years...
Doesn’t matter, I don’t have anything that could play them anyhow.
Knowth was closed when we went there because they were in the midst of making an archeological find about some carvings on rocks and tourists weren’t allowed in. We did see it on the news the next night, which was cool.
We still went to sleep pretty early.
The next morning we set off early and saw the Trim castle.

We also stopped at the Hill of Tara.

You’ll notice the sheep. There were empty tour busses there and lots of full looking sheep. So, I’m pretty sure the sheep eat tourists there. We didn’t get too close.
I did slip in the mud and slide down the hill of kings on my backside. It ground the dirt in so deeply it never came out of those pants. And, I think the camera cracked my shoulder doing it as it still hurts when the conditions are right.
But, that’s what you get for sliding your bottom down the hill of kings.
Then, we cut through Dublin without stopping and drove all the way down the east cost of Ireland to Wexford. We were told Enya lives in the mountains we drove through. We saw lots of sheep. Maybe one of them was her in disguise?
There we stayed at the B&B that had been rated the best in all of Ireland for the year before.

It was very nice.
