August, the good, the bad…
Aug. 8th, 2011 08:38 amA surprisingly high number of my friends have birthdays in August.
Back when I was a kid it was my second favorite time of year as it was the
time my sister came home to visit. My favorite was her other visiting
time, Christmas.
So, that stuff’s good.
But, some very bad things have happened in August as well.
Yesterday made it 17 years since I’ve heard from my sister.
Tomorrow will be 11 years since my father died.
Today would have been my grandmother’s birthday. (IF you knew her, you’d
know this goes under the bad event heading.)
And, there are worse anniversaries to come.
None as bad as the February 15th one, which remains the worst.
But, two others that are in the top 5.
But, our faire is coming too. 12 days away now.
And friends are coming to share that time with us, and that makes me very
happy.
One cousin has been saying she’d be there since Christmas. Another just
told me she would also be there with her family. And, my aunt now says
she’ll attend as well.
So that’s family members that haven’t been together at the same event since
my wedding (almost) 18 years ago.
That also makes me very happy.
This event that I’m looking forward to making me happy would have been
close to possible without the very hard work of my wife.
She has been a source of happiness for me for 28 years now. (OK, OK, 28
years, 22 days, 11 and a half hours. No, I don’t know the minutes, I don’t
wear a watch and didn’t in 1983 either. Dam pointy eared Vulcans…)
But, this month always feels like an “all in” moment where it’s a total win
or lose.
This year isn’t different.

Date: 2011-08-12 02:32 am (UTC)Today was my sister's birthday, but she died a few years ago, and I hadn't had anything to do with her for well over 20 years prior to that.
It's still hard.
