Generations
May. 13th, 2011 10:02 amAt dinner last night someone was telling me of a cousin who was a
grandparent at 38 and is now a great grandparent at about 60. I also know
someone who was a grandparent before 40.
That is so strange to me.
My father was born in 1915. He met civil war veterans. He remembered
greeting soldiers coming back from WWI. He was drafted into WWII. When he
was young he remembered an argument in his home town over if the roads
should be plowed for cars or left with snow for horse drawn sleighs. He
saw the first King Kong movie when it came out, and brought a date to it.
He lived to be 85 and died more than 10 years ago. And, at 47 ½ I am still
more than a year younger than he was when I was born.
The youngest of my grandparents was 63 years older than I was. (The others
were, or would have been 78, 76 & 66.)
There are times that hearing about people knowing their great grandparents,
or sometimes great, great grandparents seems really strange to me.
It seems like it must be very crowded with all those generations still
around.
But, I regret not having the chance to know my grandparents better or the
folks before them at all.
