Dream of dark schools and dogs
Dec. 13th, 2010 12:16 amI dreamed that my boss at my current company had been hired to teach a night time class at my old high school. He asked me to go along to help and I agreed.
When we got there the place was very dark. As I knew the layout, he asked me to lead the way in the dark.
I opened the doors to the corridor on the upper floors, and my boss’ dog went running off into the dark with them.
“Hey, dog come back!” I shouted. I leaned over and clapped my hands trying to get the dog to come back to us.
I saw a dog coming towards us out of the shadows. It took me a bit in the dark to realize it was not my boss’ poodle, but was a German Shepard that must be a guard dog here at the school.
As it got closer, it was clear it was going to attack me. But, I saw it had a muzzle on and couldn’t do too much.
“Don’t worry,” I told my boss. “He can’t bite.”
The dog did growl at us as we walked down the wide, dark, corridors. When we came to the end of the corridor, it turned left around the courtyard and we still hadn’t come to our room.
The German Shepard was getting very upset that we were still there, so I bent over to talk with him.
“We’re supposed to be here,” I told him. “Bruce is going to teach a class, and I’m here to help.”
The dog did not seem impressed with this explanation and continued to growl at me.
I saw that the muzzle he had on didn’t stop him from opening his mouth, but would stop him from biting down hard.
“Here, maybe this will make you feel better,” I said and put my arm into the muzzle where he could bite it, but not hard.
He grabbed my arm and began to try and pull me out of the school.
“I’m sorry, but we’re here for a reason and have to stay,” I told him.
I began walking down the corridor again, dragging the dog still attached to my left arm.
We got to the room that had been my old social studies room and I opened the door.
“Here you go, Bruce,” I said. “Room 211.”
I flipped on the lights and could see a bunch of art supplies and modeling clay piled on some desks in the middle of the room.
Once I turned on the lights the dog let go of my arm and ran back out into the dark corridor.
“This doesn’t look right,” I said, looking at the art supplies.
“Maybe it is this other room 211,” my boss said from across the hall.
I walked over as he turned on the lights. That room was full of computer equipment. His dog was already there sniffing around the room.
As we walked in the German Shepard came back. I offered him my arm again, but he shot past me to go sniff at Bruce’s dog.
Dream ends
The layout of the school was exactly as I remember the second floor of my old high school. That is strange for me. Usually if a place shows up in my dreams I know it, but it looks different. This was accurate to my memory, except I don’t ever remember seeing it in the dark.
To the best of my knowledge, the Westwood school system does not release dogs into the schools at night. But, I haven’t been back there in almost 30 years, so I can’t really say.
When I was very young, my sister had a German Shepard that was known to be aggressive. (He was one of the two dogs I've known that caught a car. And, the dog I say raised me as he seems to be in every picture of me as a baby, even if there aren't always humans.)
The German Shepard in the dream reminded me a lot of that dog.
It is not the first time my old dog friends have shown up in dreams. As with the other cases, I'm always glad to see them, even if they always seem to be pulling on one of my limbs.
