As I know I’ve said before, I’ve been a Star Trek fan since the original show when I’d watch with my sister when she was home from college.
I still have my fan club certificate she got me about 40 years ago.

I do like the new movie, very much. Of the 11 Star Trek movies, this is one of my favorites.

I am amazed at how well they kept to continuity on one hand while they utterly destroyed it with the other. There are beautiful in jokes and nods to the 40+ years of shows and movies while they say “you’ve had your fun, now for something completely different”.
Just because all of the other (many, many) time travel plots in Star Trek always tried to put things back where they found them, there is no reason that should always happen. And, it’s a great excuse to make a new series of movies and not be burdened by the existing continuity.

But, Vulcan?
That felt like someone bombed my old summer camp. How could they not save it?

I did like that Vulcan (like so many other planets in Star Trek) appears to be built on Gorn Rock. It was like seeing an old friend again.

I liked that Delta Vega has become the planet to maroon people , no matter where in the galaxy it is.
If someone is going to get marooned somewhere, it’s going to be Delta Vega. If Delta Vega needs to be at the edge of the galaxy, fine. If it needs to be in sight of Vulcan, fine. If you beam away Scott Bakula’s dog, we’ve got a place for you...

And, it seems like Starfleet has been borrowing Tardis tech. That’s the only explanation I’ve got for how they had an engineering deck that big on the Enterprise. It just kept going and going and going...
And, they’ve got nothing on that Romulan ship!
Granted, artificial gravity tech, lots of room in space, why not have a big empty ship where you get around jumping from walk way to walk way?
If you slip and fall (assuming you haven’t just been shot) the ship will probably guide you to where you want to go anyhow. Right?

And, it is REALLY easy to become a captain in Starfleet. To the point that stowaways get placed second to the top of the chain of command when they are discovered.
That would be a great way to get ahead in Star Fleet:
“Captain, there looks to be a stranger on the ship,” an officer reports.
“Great!” The captain says. “Just when I was getting used to the current first officer.”
The bridge crew proceeds to hide.
“Where did everyone go?” the captain asks. “You there, behind that console, come out and be first officer!”
“What about me sir,” says another.
“And, me!”
“Me too!”
“Hey! I’m found last, I get to be first officer today!”

And, are they cut throat about bridge positions or what?
“Do you know Romulan?”
“No, but we’ve got a universal translator!”
“Get out of the chair, this officer knows it.”
“But, communications are jammed! We’re not picking up anything!”
“But, they may unjam and the stow away says we’re dealing with Romulans so I want someone who speaks it on the bridge just in case!”
“Universal translator?!?”
“Get out of the chair and go below!”
Later on the bridge:
“Hello I’m the Romulan,” in English from the surprisingly friendly destroyer of worlds.
Below decks: “See! No one had to speak Romulan?!?!?!?”

But, these are small quibbles.
Over all I did like it very much. And, there are movies I like as much or more that I had bigger quibbles with, so no worries.

Except Vulcan.
That bugs me.

LOL! Yes, I loved how quickly things were turned over to the newbies... :-)

yep, I agree...Vulcan being imploded bites.

And yeah, the interior spaces on both Enterprise and that Gigantosaur Romulan ship was a bit much. Both are not well designed for things like artificial gravity being lost, and sharp maneuvers having poor engineering crew fall all over the place hurting themselves.

also..Scotty was able to hold his breath for a very long time despite being transported inside a water/coolant pipe, panicking and all about to be sucked into a turbine.

But then, maybe that's what Scotty is going to totally re-design for next time ?

Well, it took us long enough

but we finally got around to seeing this movie - now if we can manage to see X-men before that runs out of the theatres!!

I gotta agree with the absurdity of cadets suddenly being field commissioned 3 or 4 or 5 ranks up on the fly based on what seems like starship bridge musical chairs. While there were several plot holes in the story line big enough to drive that monstrous Romulan ship through, it was certainly one of the most action-packed and exciting Trek-Brand movies I've seen. And, while I am sad to see the Spock swan-song of the old guard, it really was time to do this if they were ever going to do anything further with the franchise. Sorta like the Marvel comic universe re-org. I think that they'll be able to get some significant mileage(parsecs?) out of this new storyline and cast - even the not so old but tired-looking gang of Picard/Worf/what's-his-name/Data, etc. appear to be unable to carry off a high-action, rough and tumble movie that doesn't inevitably end up with them blowing up or crashing another Enterprise-x..
;-) Sorry, can't resist..

Anyhow, Laura and I give this one 2 thumbs up, and even though it took us a little while to get used to "Syler" as new Spock, we think it worked well and find it more promising, plot-wise, for Spock to wear more of his human-side on the outside - even if it seems Uhura is a bit to eager to give it away..
