Election day
May. 5th, 2009 06:13 pmToday was the local election day and I walked up to the town hall in the rain to vote.

There were a bunch of folks waving signs in front of the town hall.
But, there only seemed to be one for this guy.

“Where are the other supporters of Rashid?” I asked him.
“They left me alone in the rain,” the man said.
“Well, the fact you were willing to stay says good things,” I said.
Of course, there were 8 open slots for selectpeople and 8 people running for those positions. So, I could vote for all 8 if I wanted to do so.
The only race that was really being contested was the one for town moderator.
All the town moderator does is chair the annual town meeting. But, almost every lawn in town had the sign for one of the two people running for the office.
Was I tempted by the one with the same name as a sword master from the 1400’s?

I did look over both of their websites and made the decision based on what they said there, not just their names...
On the way home I noticed that plants have been popping up all over in the last week or so.
The “Ent” area now appears to be a sunk cabbage farm.

I was very surprised that the swamp where it grows had no standing water, even during the rain.
I know it has been very dry this spring, but that’s more than I expected.
I saw one tree that impressed me with how it withstood trouble.

Another tree had fallen over on it, but it was still blooming.

Lots of trees were blooming

While pretty, tree pollen is what gets to me the most, so I can’t say I’m really happy to see it. But, all sorts of plants are blooming. Trees:

Bushes:

Small trees:

Flowers:

Small plants popping up along walls:

Whole beds of flowers:

The lilac plants are starting to get into it:

My wife will be happy about that as they are her favorite. I am allergic to them like all flowering plants and trees, but these get to me a fair bit. When I lived in NH there was a bush/tree of them that grew up right near my window of my apartment. My wife was sad she didn’t have them outside her window. I wished she did...
Even though it was raining out, there were two guys blow drying a lawn.

That seemed pretty strange to me, and it was shooting tree stuff into the road.

I guess under my feet is better than in my lungs, but I don’t like folks helping it to get airborne.
I know these blossoms won’t last long. Hopefully my supply of Kleenex will outlast them.

My wife really likes this one that has pink flowers on the bottom and white on the top of the same tree.

It is a graft, and you can see where on the trunk. But, it must have been done when the tree was much smaller as it has grown together so much.

I did see that the apartment complex is starting to repair the pool for the summer.

I expect that will take a lot of work.
But, they fixed my broken shower first, so let them do the pool next.
One good thing I found on my porch was that the wasps that stung me last fall had died over the winter. Either the cold of can of wasp spray I sprayed on them last fall.
I don’t begrudge their waspy little lives, but not on my porch.
(And, of course, I understand their relationship with the flowering plants and trees I don’t like.)
I think I’ve finished my job search DVD. I’ve burned my test copy and my wife is going to look it over tonight.
Tomorrow, I’ve got my mandatory job search class at the department of unemployment. I’m not sure how much it will help, but it can’t hurt. And, I do want to keep getting the unemployment insurance.

Date: 2009-05-07 04:34 am (UTC)The EVIL pollen is more from the wind-pollinated ones, like oaks (my current nemesis), maples, and willows etc. The ones with the showy blooms are trying to attract pollinating bugs, and so do not broadcast their pollen everywhere like these others do.
Or so I have read.
