Frank and the lake monster
Apr. 8th, 2009 07:42 pmToday I set out for Worcester, land on the far side of the lake from Shrewsbury. When I left home, it was so sunny out I needed my sunglasses. But, when I got to the road, I decided to go back for my umbrella.

Looking out over Worcester, I really expected it to rain on me as I walked along. But, I was wrong. It did not rain. It snowed.

The flakes were small and few, so they don’t photograph well. But, they were there.
I was surprised as the thermometer at the bank said it was too warm for snow.

I guess it must have been colder in the air above and still snow when it reached the ground.
In the battle with the Ent, its opponent had been thrown into a swamp and disappeared. Most of the swamps in Shrewsbury drain into Lake Quinsigamond, so that seemed like a good place to look for the monster.

I have to admit I have my suspicions about the University of Massachusetts medical school being on the shore of the lake.

They are the obvious people to look at if you’re looking for someone who might have made a lake monster. Of course, the old Worcester mental hospital is right up the hill from it too.

It’s been boarded up since the big fire a while ago. But, maybe that’s where the monster comes from: the mental hospital caught fire and the monster ran to the lake to put itself out, then decided it liked it and stayed.
I went up the hill to have a better look.
While there was no sign of the monster, I did see signs that the area was a good place for a mental hospital.

How else do you explain people blocking 2 out of 3 lanes of traffic just to make a turn?
I cast my glance back at Shrewsbury, but still could see no sign of the monster.

I decided to have a better look at the lake.
As someone who walks over the bridge, I was glad they put up a sign saying no P on the bridge. I’m sure boaters who go under it are also happy about this.

In the lake, there is an island. Theoretically no one lives there. But, if so, why is it covered with paths?

This, I suspect, is the lair of the monster. I noticed that floating up and down the lake near the island were some boats full of young women.

I suspect these are offerings to the lake monster to leave the town of Shrewsbury alone!
The town is in on this!
You can tell by the sign at the edge of town:

They have an image of the young women being sent off to the lake monster!
This explains the Ent’s anger and the town trying to block the swamp with that earth wall. The Ent knows the town is sacrificing young women to the lake monster and wants them to stop!
Just as I realized this, my wife found me along the side of the road and drove me home.
The light pouring down from above reassured me my theories were true!

However, when I got home, I found the shock of learning this made my hair shrink!

I’m not sure how to deal with that...
Or, I could say:
I spent half the morning driving through heavy traffic to meet a headhunter in person for a job that might or might not work out.
I spent most of the day cleaning the office.
I walked over to Worcester for a haircut and got a ride home with my wife.
(It really did snow.)
But, given a lot of extra time, I’ll go with the lake monsters...

Date: 2009-04-09 11:17 am (UTC)But, I do want a job. And, it is easier to get one with short hair.
(I have been told that my long hair was one of the reasons I wasn't the first person offered the job at the last place I worked...)

Date: 2009-04-09 08:47 pm (UTC)I was told the COO thought they should go with the other guy because I was "too freaky with the long hair and furry hat".
Of course, it turned out the other guy lied on his resume so they hired me 3 months later, but that's another issue.
As I walked out the door last Monday I put on my new furry hat and said to my boss "I'm going out as I came in: long hair, furry hat".

But you do look very employable now! Good luck on the job search!
