I was laid off today. For the first time in 18 years I do not have a job.

My boss was very nice about it, as were the company representatives who gave me the deal.
They were far nicer than other places that have laid me off in the past.
But, it is still sad.

I was still very sick. So, at least I got to go home, right?

Well, and you were waiting for it.... it was coming and you knew it.

Still - I'm sorry. Hope you find something fast. I hear GM is looking for a new CEO....

You're right, surprise was not an emotion I experienced...

Despite the lack of surprise, it's still not a good thing. And, I've been to Detroit. I got stuck in the airport there in 81 when the air traffic controllers went out on strike. That was enough Detroit for me. So, GM will have to find someone else...

I'm sorry to hear about this.

And to echo the comment above - I suspect you'd do a better job running GM from where you live than Rich Wagoner did, so, you know, go for it!

I just did a search on the T-F intranet and there are two engineering jobs in Mass -- a manufacturing engineer in Billerica and a Product development engineer in Milford.

I am so sorry to hear of your employment turmoil - they truly are behaving irrationally and are idiotically short-sighted to let a good engineer go like that. But, at least it wasn't a complete surprise, and you don't have to deal with the dumb marketing blond, or the incompetent purchasing people, or the incompetent factory manager, or the flip-flopping CEO, or the crazy psychotic consultant bitch from hell, or,, well you get the point.

It really bites to be looking for a job in this economy, but I am certain that a good engineer like you will fine a better, more sane place to be before too long. I'll keep my eyes are ears open for ya, too.

Might want to check out a website called "linkedin.com" (Gary and I are members, as are many other tech professionals I know) - getting leads on job contacts, references, etc. is useful/helpful in that site. But for now, just try to decompress, try to relax a little and get your health back before you take on anything else!

I found it funny that someone said
"And perhaps you'll get some consulting-at a much higher rate for this place"
I couldn't help but feel there was a ring of truth to that given some of the stories

Well, there is some truth to that, but I will certainly tell anyone that there are definite "cons" as well as "pros" to taking the consulting route. It can be very challenging and interesting, but it is certainly not for everyone. There are times when I would like to have a "regular" job at a single employer, especially when I have to nag clients about paying me on time. But then I've also worked on a greater diversity of stuff and done more technical design work without all the office politic crap in the past 2 years then I did in 5 years at Rockwell, and that is personally rewarding for me, too. If Frank thinks about going the consultant route, even temporarily, I will gladly offer some tips if he is interested in talking.
