I’ve been asked by a few people about making those comics I’ve been doing about the stories of my youth. So, here’s how I make them.

First, I need the idea. As this note from my phone yesterday shows, I often have to be reminded of the different stories when I actually work on them.

I’ve got a book that has high resolution images of the Bayeux Tapestry. I used my iPhone’s nice camera to take photos of figures I think can be used.

I’m thinking of doing older stories of when I was younger using older art. So, I’ve been scanning some old Greek pottery too. We’ll see if that develops or not.

Then, I transfer those photos over to my iPad.

Using a free version of Photoshop (with a fair number of ads…) I separate out the figures from the rest of the images.

Then I use a app called "Comic Life" to actually import the images and add the text.

The advantage of that program as I have it on both my iPad and my Mac. And, the OS lets be flip it back and forth between the two. So, I do most of the editing on my iPad, but then do final adjustment on the Mac and save it as a PDF there. I find the different screens have different quirks, so some of the word balloons aren’t as readable if I just do it on the iPad. I get it on the Mac, and words are cut off, or spit between lines.

Then, upload it, check the links and post it…
