And now, the vultures
Mar. 16th, 2020 12:47 pmAfter every disaster, and some times during, there are folks trying to make a buck off of it.
Today I got a call from a headhunter, one who specializes in placing engineers at companies.
This isn’t a surprise. As an engineering manager, I usually get calls several times a day.
But, this one was a bit farther out than I expected.
“I know things are crazy there and you probably don’t have any openings,” he told me.
“Both true,” I confirmed.
“But, I just want to get my name in line for after all this is over to fill in the holes in your group.”
“Holes?”
“When this is all done, every organization will have holes. I just want to be first in line to fill them.”
“How many of us do you think are going to die?”
“No one knows! But, I’ve got a lot of candidates. So, I’ll still have people to offer you when it’s all done!”
“OK. I’ll keep that in mind and call if I need holes filled.”
“Call my cellphone as I’m working from home now. No way will I be going in to my office any time soon.”
“Got it.”
Part of me is horrified at this person being practically gleeful that a plague might get him extra commissions.
Part of me is glad that so far, he’s the only one who has looked at it in this light.
And, part of me is worried about just how many holes I may need to fill…
