Monday morning we got up and drove up to northern New Hampshire.

We got to where the cog railway goes up Mount Washington. https://www.thecog.com

The 150th anniversary of the railroad was last week.

The moon approved.

We had specifically bought tickets for the steam engine trip to the top, so had to wait until that one was up.

Someone was interested in the steam engine because a drone was over taking photos.

We did get in line to get on.

We were ready to go, but one of the other engines was in the way.

Other ones were partway up the mountain.

Ours did get going eventually.

You got a good view of the cog as it went up.

And, up we went.

Eli, our conductor, also worked as tour guide on the way up.

The train only goes at 5km an hour, so it takes a while…

We did need to stop for water for the steam engine.

Eli watched out for animals running across the track, but we didn’t see any.

He did tell us about things like the lodge for hikers.

Everyone was very impressed.

You get nice views as you go up.

But, we did get to the top.

We did clime to the very top. A good three meters up from the train…

You do get nice views.

Some compared climbing the rocks to being like a mountain goat.

We had an hour at the top.

There is a gift shop and snack bar.

It was nice.

There is a rebuild of the 150 year old hotel at the top. Not overly modern.

I did talk with the crew some about the engine. Very interesting.

I think we could see the ocean. Ben was not sure.

We did discuss it a lot.

Then, time to load back up.

They had turned the seats over so we still faced the direction of motion.

Going down I noticed some snow still on the side of the mountains.

Still nice views.

Eli manned the brakes on the way down at the front of the car. So, much less tour information.

Still nice views though.

Eventually our start place came into view.

One of the problems with aisle seats is folks between you and the windows for photos.

But, I was near the door on the way down, so could see behind us well.

I’m told the solar powered switches are very useful to the crew.

The only moose we saw was plastic.

Everyone was very impressed.

We did get to the bottom.

There was a lot of effort for photos with the mountains in the background.

But, eventually.

Then, back on the road.

We stopped in Plymouth New Hampshire for dinner.

Then, back home.
