Dental problems

When I was young my father had all kinds of dental problems.
“I hope you didn’t inherit by bad teeth,” he would often say.
Sadly, like I was just as disobedient to that request as many of his others.d

Last week I went to our new dentist to start the process of a crown on one of my upper left teeth.
It was only the second time I’ve been there. Our old dentist of the last 15 or so years quite and moved to France. This young woman took over this business.
She seems to know what she’s doing, but has doesn’t have his level of experience yet.

The drilling went OK. But, when she had cleared away the bad stuff she decided it was too close to my nerve and I’d have to have a root canal before she finished the crown.
I’ll have that done next week.

She put in a temporary crown and sent me on my way.
As time passed, I started to get more and more pain.
Not in the tooth she worked on, but on it’s matching one in my lower jaw.

Last night it was bad enough to wake me up at 3 and make it hard to get back to sleep.
So, I emailed her and asked for an appointment.
She made time for me this morning.

Strangely, the tooth I’m having pain in had a root canal and crown 3 years ago from our old dentist.

So, if there is not longer a nerve there, what’s hurting?

It seems that crown may not be seated well. So, things could be getting under it and down into the jaw. Maybe just irritation. Maybe infection.
It’s not yet clear.

If an even deeper root canal is needed, I’d have to go to a specialist and it would take a lot of work.

She can put on a new crown to seal it better, but only after the nerve issue is determined.
And, it is close enough to my jaw that some of the bone would need to be removed.

Also, from what she could see, the temporary crown was not hitting the lower tooth. Part of my upper tooth was, but that was always there. So, it shouldn’t have started hitting now.
There is some question of my bit being off and what to do about that.

This is in addition to the crown she had already started. I only get a limited amount of dental insurance each year and one crown is the limit.
So, this could be quite expensive for me depending on how it happens.

And, best case, it is going to take a lot more time in her chair.
I am not happy about all this.
But, I would like this pain to go away…

This tooth is not one of the ones I broke three dozen years ago when I got drunk and fell on my face. But, it is next to one of them. So, it is certainly possible that this is related to that stupid event back in the winter of 1983.

People say that if they had time travel they’d stop Hitler or 911 or something like that.
Me, I’d go back and say “don’t drink those schnapps!”
But, that’s me.
