fbhjr: Eclipse (Eclipse)

For several years now I’ve been planning our trip to see the “Great American Eclipse”. Of course, the only started calling it that the last few weeks.

One of the big questions for me was "Where to go that has the best chance of clear skies in late summer?"

Back in 2013 when I visited [personal profile] charliemc and her sister in Oregon they told me about the desert in eastern Oregon and I started thinking about that as a place to view it.

The data supported what she said and that east half of Oregon became my prime target. About two years ago it became clear that I was not the only one who came to that conclusion as EVERYTHING in that area was selling out for the weekend of the eclipse.
So, I shifted a bit farther east to the Idaho border and the area along Interstate 84.

I made hotel reservations in Boise Idaho and picked my best 3 spots along 84 north west of there.

Then, with only a week to go, all that fell apart.
The Boise hotel cancelled my reservation.
The rental car in Boise feel through.
It became apparent that the spots I had picked were going to be VERY full.

So, I changed plans.
There were mirror spots to all the places I had picked north of the eclipse line too.
Some of them still had rooms.
While it was a long drive from Seattle to Boise, we had all day Sunday to make it.
I could cancel half the trip from Seattle to Boise and just fly back.

I booked a room in Baker City, which was a mirror to my number 3 spot, and planned on that.

That ended up working out well.

I did have a long argument with Delta Airlines about the flying only one way.
When I called them up they told me I could fly back from Boise to Seattle, if I paid $200 each to change my ticket from a round trip to a one way.
The fundamental stupidity of them charging me $400 to only do half of what I had pre-paid for was a topic of about 40 minutes of my time with them.
Then, they dropped it to $1 each. But, their computer crashed when taking my $2.
So, they gave it to me for free.
(Delta computers crashing turned out to be a theme of the trip…)

It’s good I had researched a lot.
It’s good our plans were flexible.
We got very lucky in several places.
Folks were very kind to us and helped us a lot.

It worked out well…
