One of the guys at work was trying to get me help him with a problem.

"See, if it doesn’t hit this pin here, it falls at the rate of gravity," he said.
"9.8 meters per second per second?" I asked.
"That’s what it normally is on Earth."
"And, we’re on Earth?"
"Do you have reason to believe we aren’t?"
"I am less certain today that some days," I replied.

He jumped up and down a bit.
"Feels like Earth gravity to me," he said.
"Good to know."

The gravitational field is constant, but the amount of drop changes. So, it doesn't built up quite as much speed.
