Well, that was unexpected

My boss pulled me into his office this afternoon, told me he has something he needed to tell me and handed me a letter.
It said I was getting a 3% raise.

I stared at it for a bit.
"You look confused," he said. "I’m sorry I couldn’t get you more after all your great work this year, but it is the best I could get for you."
"That’s not why I am confused," I explained. "I thought it was going to be a letter with my severance terms."
"Why would you think that?"

So, I explained.

He told me that I was totally off base. He thinks I’m doing a great job. Doing "massive" amounts of "great work" and it is very appreciated.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want to pack my things, go home and file for unemployment.
But, I didn’t expect this either.

Still a bit confused about it all...

Your boss is... kinda crazypants. Good luck weathering the coming days/weeks/months/etc. Maybe you should try yelling back at him when he pops a gasket on you. (I doubt I could ever do that but it's fun to think about.)

you shouldn't get to use someone as your whipping boy one day and then pat them on the head and tell them they've totally misinterpreted the situation the next. no way.
