Round and round and round…

In the spring of 1983 I had broken up with my girlfriend after a gay guy said to me “I don’t see what you see in women anyhow, but this time I really don’t see it. Can you explain to me why it’s worth it?” I wasn’t able to. It wasn’t worth it. So, we broke up.

I spent the next few months trying to meet someone new, and not having much luck at it. It was summer. I was taking classes, but there weren’t a lot of folks around. My friends kept trying to set me up with people. But, their taste and mine weren’t very close.

On July 16th, my friend Jack invited me to a party at his place.
“You should come over,” he said. “There will be girls there.”

He wasn’t lying. But, only just. There were two girls there, one of whom was his girlfriend at the time.

That other girl and I did get together. As of today, we’ve been together for about 14 billion, 768 million, 517 thousand and 518 miles. That only counts the spin of the Earth and going around the solar system. It’s still pretty far. But, that’s what 9132 days will get you.

What is the miles per day figure?
My calculator doesn't go that high and I am too lazy to do it longhand. :-)

Roughly 93,000,000 miles earth to sun. So 2 * PI * that for the circumference. That times 25 years together.
The other factor was a bit harder. The circumference of the earth at 42 degrees up from the equator times the number of days in 25 years together.

I also took into account the extra leap day in 25 years, so the orbit is 3/4 of a day behind the day count.

Either way, it's been 25 years since I met my wife...

Looking at it another way, we could have gone to the following places and back this number of times:
The sun 78
Mercury 202 (almost 203)
Venus 108
Mars 51
Jupiter 15
Saturn 8
Uranus 4
Neptune 2
Pluto 1, but by Labor day we'd get back from the second trip.
(And, don't give me any of that "Pluto's not a planet" stuff. It was a planet when we would have left on the trip!
