The world asleep

Yesterday when I was driving into the airport at 3AM it struck me as strange. I'm not sure why as I had done the same thing only two weeks before, and drive through the night for the sword troupe several times a year.
But, yesterday is seemed like the world really was asleep as I drove through it.
The whole 45 minute drive I saw maybe a dozen other people, including those in cars on the road.
In day time it is usually hundreds if not thousands.

20+ years ago when we lived in the city along a major road there were times I'd get the same feeling. If I couldn't sleep in the middle of the night I'd sit in the window and look out the sleeping world.

I like the stillness in those times. I really have no idea why it seems true some nights and not others...

I've had that feeling a couple of times when I've had to take a taxi in the middle of the night to get places, or to get home. Seeing the normally busy roads almost completely silent is very strange but peaceful.
