OK, I know I'm a fat guy.
I have never in my life been what would be called skinny.
Even back in the days when I was on the swim team in high school and swam 3-4 miles a day every day I was not skinny.

These days when I'm an engineering manager and spend 30% of my time in meetings and most of the rest in front of my computer screen? Nope. Just not going to lose weight.
Yes, I ride my exercise bike about half the nights of the week and do the sword fighting stuff too. But, I eat a lot too.

In the fall of 2013 at my annual physical I was told I was 327 pounds/148kg. I was surprised as that was about 20pounds/10kg more than I expected.

This year at my physical I was told I was 304pounds/138kg. While I'd like to think I had lost that weight, my pants fit the same and I did not feel any lighter.

For this trip to the Grand Canyon you needed to be under 300 pounds or pay extra. So, for three weeks I did my best. I gave up snacks. I rode the bike more. I skipped a few meals.
The day we left on our trip, my belt was one notch tighter than it had been.

When we got to that airport to fly out to the Grand Canyon they weighed me.
325 pounds/147kg.

I don't see any way I went down a belt size but went up 21 pounds/9kg.

One of these data points must be wrong. The question is which.
The most likely is the doctor's office 3 weeks ago. If I was really 340 instead of 304, then it would make sense I had dropped to 325 with my efforts.

The problem is, I watched the nurse take my weight on the scale. I could see the weights as she slid them back and forth. It wasn't a digital scale where she might have written it down wrong.
It was 304.
Or, their scale is off by more than 10% on the light side.

My wife has also pointed out that the airline gets more money if you are over 300. So, they have incentive to make their scale off to the heavy side.

That belt notch tighter I got had never been used in the 5 years I've had this belt until last week.
It is hard to believe it wasn't the least I've weighted in a while too...

IT is almost enough to get me to actually buy a scale and track this stuff.
But, not quite.

maybe you converted some of that fat to muscle? Muscle weighs more than fat. Which just seems wrong to me.

I'm sorry you had to pay extra. That sucks.

They DO that?!?!?! Which airline is this?
Also, in order to charge you $$$ for anything, they have to use a calibrated, trade legal scale. Anything less and they're the ones in trouble. And they'd BETTER be able to provide the last date the scale was calibrated.

It was the "Grand Canyon Scenic Airline".
It was still a good time. And, they warned me several times up front about the limit and what would happen if I went over it.

I just wouldn't have bothered to try and lose the weight if I hadn't thought I was right on the edge of the limit.

Well, I hope you feel free to enjoy the boofays at Bellagio and the Wynn if you're still in Vegas. Loved them for lunch...

Or the eateries of Name your Celebrity Chef. They've all got one or more.

Plus...scales suck...for reals the day I went to the E.R. I weighed more then 10lbs less at the E.R. than I did in my docs office ON.THE.SAME.DAY. (I trust my docs scale the most because it generally weighs me the same as my home scale)

your wife may have a point, but [livejournal.com profile] newlifeinstpaul also.
they must be able to prove when the scale was calibrated the last time!

The difference in scales has always bothered me. How am I supposed to lose weight if they all tell me something different?!

It would be interesting to see some of your statistics on this matter :)

It sucks you have to pay extra but it sounds a little suspicious that two weighing scales could be so different.
