On being honest
Oct. 9th, 2014 10:01 pmMonday when I got some candy from the candy machine at work, it gave me two bags of M&Ms instead of one.
I felt quit bad about that as I could not figure out any way to properly pay for that second bag.
Yesterday when buying lunch at the cafeteria, I thought of something.
"Does you company do the candy machines?" I asked.
"We do," the cashier said. "Has one broken?"
"Not really," I replied. "But, it gave be two bags of M&Ms when I only paid for one. I thought I should pay you for the extra one."
"The machine gives you extra candy, then you should celebrate that happy day!" he said.
"OK, I’ll do that. But, remember I did offer to do the right thing."
"So noted. Who’s next in line?"
So, free candy. Yay.

Date: 2014-10-10 02:24 am (UTC)I had a very similar experience with the previous two companies I worked for that had vending machines.
The print shop short-changed me, and the HR person who was in control of the petty cash thought it was odd for me
to make sure I got the extra $1 back for having to get 1 item.
The sign shop was known to hold back on depositing of requested and paid items. Usually dangling the item with
the very end of the screw advancer thingy, taunting you. It was allowed for one to rock or bang on the
machine to get it to drop. That netted me some extra candy once or twice. The first time, the person "in charge"
said don't worry about it.
Eventually it got greedy/extra taunting and coworkers would offer the extra free item to others, most refused the buck
for an item that was "free".
That greedy machine got replaced at some point I think.

Date: 2014-10-10 09:39 pm (UTC)This reminds me of a similar situation I had a few years ago at school. Our students were abusing my in-classroom printer and I was told we couldn't afford the printing they were doing. As a way to slow the hemorrhage I started charging those who needed to print the same thing they would pay at our building's copier. At the end of the semester I tried to turn the money in to our business office and the woman who runs it nearly had a fit. She laughed and told me that the paperwork required to accept that money was such a pain to do (and apparently re-entering money into an academic budget is FAR harder than spending it) that it would be easier if I just pretended we had never had that conversation and used the money to buy something for my students. I bought some paper for the room instead, it just felt right.
