It was a cold and grey day today.

As there was a 70 car accident on the road we usually take to sword practice, we decided to go another way: http://www.telegram.com/article/20131201/NEWS/131209998/1116

Traffic was still slow as everyone else had the same idea.

It was a bit warmer in Connecticut where the practice area is, but only a bit. 38F/3C.

We mostly worked on teaching the new guy stuff.

But, my wife and [Bad username or site: “blue_micha" @ livejournal.com] did spend a lot of time trying to adapt and older fight. (For new folks, my wife has the hat on.)

Then [Bad username or site: “blue_micha” @ livejournal.com] and the new guy worked on a rapier fight as he wants to use 2 weapons at a time and rapier and dagger go together.
I suggested they use De Grassi’s style. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giacomo_Di_Grassi

So, they worked on that. (For new folks, I’m the one in the middle in the blue shirt.)

As we wanted to get home before the roads froze up, we left a bit early. We got home just about sundown and I hope the ice is gone before I have to go to work tomorrow.

We do have costuming that is for colder shows.

So far we don't have any winter shows scheduled. The closest will be at the start of March, but it is in Florida (almost 2000km south of here), so usually isn't so bad. (There was one year it snowed, but that was the exception.)

There was one year we did a New Year's Eve show on a frozen lake.

That still holds the record for our coldest show.

No, we hardly do any show of any type in the winter. Most of our shows are spring and summer with a few in the fall.

There have been problems in the summer or fall with fire bans. It depends on the year, some are more dry than others. But, we're never as dry as you folks are there.

Great fighting!! Are the swords made out of metal? Those that we have displayed in our house are, and they're HEAVY as hell!! I can not imagine twirling it!

They are steel. But, not too heavy. 3 to 4 pounds. (1.5 to 2kg)
We do practice with them a lot. Usually every Sunday afternoon all year.

The news is now saying 65 cars. So, no, not 70 as reported yesterday.
They probably counted the parts that had to be towed away and 5 were in two halves.

Every summer people forget how to drive on ice and come fall this happens.

It happened to my wife once, 20 years ago, when she stopped at a red light and the 40 people behind her slid into the back of her car.
