A preponderance of Tuesdays
Nov. 5th, 2013 08:15 amI am happy my birthday will fall on a Saturday this year. I don’t really
like working on my birthday, and am usually not willing to spend a vacation
day on it. So, this works out well.
I was born on a Saturday, so for the 50th it seemed strange to me it would
come around to Saturday again. As the leap year is a 4 year cycle, I’d
have thought I’d have hit it on 48 or 52.
So, of course, I decided to see what was the distribution of days of my
birthday over the last 50 years.
I expected Saturday to be in the lead as I was born on one and this year is
one.
But, what I didn’t expect is Tuesday to have as large a score!
What’s with that?
I don’t like Tuesday. It is my least favorite day of the week.
Yet it attracts my birthday more than any other day other than the one that
gets an unfair advantage.

I’m sure it is because Tuesday knows I don’t like it. It’s following me
around trying to get back in my good graces.
I’ll tell you now, it’s not going to happen!
Down with Tuesday!

Date: 2013-11-05 03:13 pm (UTC)I think that, despite your dislike of Tuesday, there could be worse-
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay
I guess though, since you were born on a Saturday, your fate is sealed ;)
That's OK, I was also born on a Saturday.. I think we'll never retire!

When I was in school they altered the schedule for Tuesday and Thursday so
that you had more classes in the day. I think it was so you could have a
double long gym class, but it made all the other classes shorter. Gym was
by far my least favorite thing in school, so that never went over well with
me.
In college my school often gave Wednesday off. Or, at least fewer classes
than normal. So, Tuesday was usually packed and was the day you were given
extra work for your day off.
My first job out of college the owner took every Monday off. So, he’d come
in Tuesday with some brilliant plan about how things should be changed.
There was one summer where every Tuesday for more than two months he
changed my job responsibilities. Almost always adding, not removing.
I had been hired as an engineer. By the end of that summer I was:
engineer, quality manager, iron melting manager (it was an iron foundry),
sand manager, back up pouring manager, plating shop supervisor, shipping
manager, safety manager, environmental protection officer and data entry
person.
That list doesn’t count the ones he took away from me as well of: freezer
manufacturing manager, wood shop manager, freezer shipping manager and
inventory control officer.
This resulted in my being 23 and in charge of 8 people from a prison work
release program. Some of them had been in prison longer than I had been
alive. And, they gave me less trouble than the union people I had to deal
with.
So, I came to dread Tuesdays as I knew it would mean he was going to add
something on to my job. Quite often something I didn’t want to do, was
never trained to do and wasn’t qualified to do.
There has never been any doubt in my mind that as bad as my current job may
get, it is better than that one.
But, I still don’t like Tuesday.
