One of the two Visa bills that my wife and I set our selves to remove is now gone.
I got the May bill today and it was for $153. I thought, “I e-paid them $200 Friday.”
So, I called them and they confirmed a $43 balance in my favor. (Don’t try and do the math. It’s credit card company math. I’ll pay the $4 to keep them away.)

So, I pushed the button to talk with an account person. I waited on hold for more than 5 minutes, which really isn’t that bad.
“Can I help you?” the woman asked.
“I’d like to cancel my account,” I said.
“Have we done something wrong?” she asked.
“No, I’m just trying to get rid of credit cards and credit card debt,” I said.
“Oh,” she said. “I understand.”
“So, cancel it,” I said.
“I’ve put it in to be canceled,” she said. “What should I do with your $43 balance?”
“Sent it to me, give it to charity, or keep it for yourself,” I said. “I don’t care as long as you cancel my account.”
“I’m not allowed to keep it,” she said. “I’ll have a check sent to you.”
“Sure,” I said. “Why not?”
“Is there anything else I can do for you?” she asked.
“Is my account canceled?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Then you’ve been a very nice credit card company, but there isn’t anything else I want from you,” I said.
“Have a nice afternoon,” she said.

So, one of them gone. It was the smaller of the two. But now I can throw everything at the other one.

Dun Dun Dun...And anothah one bites thuh dust!

congrats!

I incidentally paid off my car last month and had about a $200 overage, so got a check from the bank for the difference. I was pushing myself to pay an additional $50 each month to try and get it paid off faster. Timing could not have been better, gas prices hitting the way they would have now as I would have normally been paying it off would have been rough...Of course...gas prices have also meant more tough decsions... But I'm trying to scrimp and save for a while now.

Yeah for you guys !!!

It is a very good thing - you may be surprised at how much faster you can pay off your other card and improve your personal savings once you get rid of those plastic albatrosses about your neck !

Oh, one thing to consider...

Apparently if you start having several credit cards cancelled (apparently it doesn't matter if it is YOU or the CC company that is doing the canceling on the account) it can still reflect NEGATIVELY on your credit rating. So, DO try to pay off any remaining balances on credit cards, but resist the urge to cancel more of them until after they've been fully paid off for some months so you don't unintentionally hurt your credit rating by divesting yourself of credit cards too quickly. Hide them somewhere in the house (not in your wallet) if you must to avoid using them if necessary.
