Adventures in Internet repair

As I said before, when we got home from work yesterday, our internet was out.
My wife worked for a couple of decades as an IT person, so she knows all the things you should do to fix it. None of them worked.
It was too late when we got back from Game Night to work on it, so this morning I set off on it.
We found that the connection worked if I plugged my computer directly in to the cable modem feed. So, it was our Apple Wireless router. But, all the diagnostics we had for that said it was fine.
So, we set off for the closest Apple Store, about 1/2 hour away.
I made may appointment there: http://fbhjr.livejournal.com/741729.html
Then, my wife and I went off to our favorite Indian Restaurant about 10 minutes from there.

It was a 2 Lime Ricky day.

Honestly I prefer the Raspberry Lime Rickies but this place only has lime ones.
It had been fairly crowded when we first went to the mall to make my appointment. But, when we went back it was totally crazy.
I only then realized it was a rainy Saturday the day before Mother’s Day and EVERYONE in the state was there to buy presents for their mother.
We had to go through 3 garages and 5 levels to find a space to park.
Of course, folks like this did not make it easier.

The Apple Store was pretty crowded.

The woman who finally saw me, 10 minutes after my appointment, showed me a trick to reset the router to its factory settings. The normal reset, and power cycling, don’t flush any settings, so if something is jammed it stays that way.
Erasing its brain does make it start over so it can be re-taught.
I had a bit of trouble finding the car again through the five levels. Apparently my seeing I was one level too high for my car and walking back to the stairs was a major disappointment to a parking vulture hoping for my space. Ah well. Such is life.

So, the brainless router was brought home and all my settings installed again.
Now, it works again.
Yay.

Date: 2013-05-12 11:53 pm (UTC)I really like my Linksys router - I've had several over the years. While it isn't 100% bullet-proof, it is almost. Our DVR however, does get upset about power glitches from time to time and the ONLY way to bring to operational status involves leaving it unplugged (must be physically unplugged) for at least 12 hours - eventually all the capacitors in it drain completely and then it will power up, reboot and work again. Alas.
