Adventures in Shrewsbury
May. 12th, 2008 01:35 pmSunday was a fine spring day. Since neither of us were going to see our
mothers, we decided to walk around town and appreciate the arrival of the
leaves.

We set out following the same basic route I take with my bike. However,
where I avoid one of the major roads through the center of town on my bike
(route 140) we walked along it on the sidewalk.
My wife really likes lilacs and they were in bloom.

I have always had a fondness for bridges, especially ones over water. So,
this yard along 140 that has a stream running through it with a bridge has
always seemed very nice to me.

(As nice as it is to look at, I’m glad I don’t have to mow the lawn with
the 4’ trench to fall into if you’re not careful.)
We got up to the center of town and stopped on the town square. It is a
nice little park area. There are several monuments to the various things
that have gone through Shrewsbury over the last couple of centuries.
We stopped for a bit when we got there.

I lay down on the bench with my head in my wife’s lap. Looking up all the
trees were now green.

We moved on to the graveyard next to the big church in the center of town.
My wife says she things this is a good picture of her. (I say because
she’s so far away in it. She didn’t say I was wrong…)

She found the point from one of the war memorial stars on the ground as we
walked through. We looked around, but couldn’t find where it came from.

I stopped to take pictures, which meant I fell behind. Apparently my
choice of when to cross the street was also considered strange…

We walked past the Shrewsbury power company where they have the back up
generators for the town in case we get cut off from the grid. There are
all sorts of “warning high voltage” signs around it. But, I guess that
isn’t enough to keep folks out. So, they add this “warning pesticide on
the grass” sign.

(Personally I don’t see anyone who is stupid enough to ignore the shock
hazard being warned off by bug spray. But, what do I know?)
We then took my bike path back to the roads near our house. My wife didn’t
know this was there, and I think most don’t. Otherwise there would be a
lot more people using it.

It does go through a swamp, and that’s the start of the stream that runs
under the bridge we saw on the way up to the center of town.

It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours on a spring day. I liked
spending the time with my wife. It was a zero cost way to have fun
together.
