The second Friday of most months, our friends [livejournal.com profile] zosh & [livejournal.com profile] yebo have a game night at their house. Last night was the night for this month.
As we didn’t have one in December, they kept the Christmas spirit going for us.

Most folks bring something to share for dinner. Many game nights folks have just dived into the food as soon as there seemed to be enough to make a meal.
But, starting in 2013, we’re trying for a kinder, gentler game night where we wait for food folks said they were bringing so that side dishes don’t get abandoned because everyone is full by the time they show up.

That led to actual talking instead of eating!

(I don’t think my wife was trying to make a rude gesture there, but must admit I don’t really remember.)

The good news was [livejournal.com profile] blue_micha made some appetizers, and they went pretty fast.

Soon people and pies arrived and the real eating began.

One side effect of waiting to eat, when we do start to eat, everyone just sits down and eats. Not much roaming about or talking when it goes on.

Then, there was the deciding which game to play.

I was very sad as I had bought the expansion to the game Dixit and was very excited to play. But, leaving the house I grabbed the wrong box. So, I only had the base set, not the expansion I had been looking forward to playing.
But, we still played and it was fun.

The folks in the other room were playing some game about disease ravaging the world. Given the flu epidemic we’re having now, I’m just as glad I kept to Dixit.

After we played the first game, I drove home and got the expansion I wanted to play. It’s only a 20 minute round trip and gave folks a chance for desert.
The, with additional players, we played the expansion.

We got some folks who don’t normally play games at game night to play. So, that was a good thing.

That other game was still going on. After 2 games of Dixit and my driving home to get the expansion.

We moved on to other games.

My wife had bought me “Cards against humanity” for Christmas, so we tried that.
It is basically giving rude answers to questions. Not really my thing, but it was fun watching [livejournal.com profile] palusbuteo fail to be able to read some of the answers without cracking up.

The other room finally swapped to another game and was playing Star Trek Settlers of Catann.

I’m not a big Catann fan, even if I am a big Star Trek fan, so I skipped that.

Post games folks spent a lot of time hanging around and talking.

Not a bad thing, but we didn’t get home until well after midnight. I’m sure it was much later for the folks who live more than 10 minutes away.

All in all a good night with good friends and good food.
That’s a great way to start the year.

I've never seen/heard of the games you are playing - and I play a lot of boards games.

PS.. That's a lovely tree.

The one we're really fond of these days is Dixit;

The other one mentioned is the Star Trek version of:

This is the other one we played that was OK, but I'm not really into games that try and say shocking things just for the sake of doing so:

Another one we like, but did not play last night is:

K brought "Cards Against Humanity" here over Xmas, and we played it the night before she left- along with an old friend of hers, and a friend of that friend. We all had a great time. I think it's because we all mostly got absurdist rather than shocking with the answers- the idea was to make people laugh, not be the Most Outrageous.

Like, one question was "What have your parents been hiding from you?" and one of the answers was "hope". In our context, that was very funny.

It can be a real hoot! but I can see that the group of players needs to have a similar sensibility- when we played it, everyone was pretty much out for giggles, rather than being shocking.
