Strange weather, no surprise
May. 11th, 2012 08:19 amJust about 29 years ago, OK 10591 days ago, it was the last day of the
school year for me and my friends. I lived in an apartment with 5 other
guys and we wanted to have a party. We all kicked in money for food each
week and we took what was left in the jar down to the local supermarket.
Even in 1983, $7 and change would not get you a party.
So, standing in the meat department of Iandoli’s Supermarket, we decided
that we’d all pay for our own stuff and have the party anyhow.
For the next 22 years we had the Bring Your Own Steak party every May. It
was the one party where all of our friends would travel great distances to
attend. The one time a year we got to see old friends.
parties. (The first one was 64 for days before I met my wife, so she
didn’t attend the first.)
It also seemed to be a time for weird things to happen. Lawns on fire,
random explosions, thefts of inflatable Godzillas, etc. And, more often
than not, rain and/or snow would show up at our May cookout.
It’s been 7 years since we called an end to these parties. But, for the
May game night
cookout, even if not quite the same.
All week long, the weather report for Friday has been good.
Today on the news it changed.
“We’ve got a weird weather day today,” the woman on channel 7 said. “It
should be mostly good all day, then towards evening a cell of unstable air
will come down out of the north. It won’t be wide spread, but there might
be some rain, some thunderstorms, even some hail or worse in very isolated
areas west of the city.”
She was pointing right about
So, we’ll see tonight. Maybe it will miss us. Maybe it won’t even happen
at all.
But, I won’t be surprised either way.

Date: 2012-05-11 02:13 pm (UTC)The first BYOS that I attended - cannot recall whose house it was at now- I was talking with Ted, Yebo, and a few other guys, when the suddenly looked at me with their eyes bugged out, "Man, you've got the biggest spider crawling up you shirt!!" I just started to feel legs tickling on my throat and just brushed it off. I didn't think much of it til I looked down on the ground and saw a spider about as big as a pet tarantula in the grass at my feet (now I wasn't even naked at the time)! That kinda freaked me out - I'm glad that I didn't attend any other BYOS events at that same house, but I do miss them.
