Yesterday I got a call from the head of finance at the Toyota dealership
where I got my new car.
“Your loan for the car didn’t got through,” he told me.
“But, I’ve had the car for 2 ½ weeks,” I said. “We paid the down payment,
signed all the paperwork, and got it registered.”
“Yes,” he said. “But, the loan company sent it back to me because you
signed where your wife should have and your wife signed where you should
have.”
“We signed where you told us to sign.”
“Yes, this is my fault,” he said. “If you can come in and resign the
papers I’ll fill your car with gas.”
“And the other option is I just pay you the $19,000 we still owe on the
car?” I asked.
“You could do that if you want,” he said.
“We’ll be in to sign the papers tonight,” I told him.

So, last night after work my wife and I went out, had a nice dinner and
then went and resigned the paperwork. We did check that all the payments
were the same, and everything else was the same on it. It was only 2 forms
of the 15 or so we had signed when we got it. It took longer for him to go
fill my car with gas than it did to sign the forms. (The car got 45.08 MPG
that tank of gas.)

It is remarkable how well this works out for me. Between car repairs on
the Subaru, the down payments on the new car and some other expenses, this
was going to be a tight month for us.
But, now that first car payment has been pushed back at least 2 ½ weeks
from where I expected it. That’s a whole paycheck later.
That’s very convenient for me.
