I apologized to the factory manager for yelling at him Friday.
He was very nice about it. “I know dealing with those inspectors would
drive anyone crazy”, he said.
For my part, although I still feel he is incompetent, I understand that he
is way over his head and doing his best to keep on top of things. That’s
the problem with getting a job because the CEO is your buddy. It doesn’t
mean you’re qualified for the job.
When the factory was thirty people, I’m sure he was fine for it. Now that
it is 300…
Anyhow, as my boss said, I can’t have an adversarial relationship with them.

Glad to hear of it - it cost less than buying him a cup of coffee, and it will help make things go more smoothly in the future. People who are in way over their abilities will find a way to demonstrate their inadequacies so that even the most friendly of CEOs eventually cannot dismiss or ignore the shortcomings. You don't want to be on any list that this person might use as an excuse as to why he cannot do his job correctly: "See, this engineer hates me and intentionally sets me up to fail", or "this person NEVER fills the coffee pot again after emptying it", or...you get the drift.

Hope that this week goes much better for you than last week !!

It's like you and my boss read from the same "how to be an engineering manager" script...

That doesn't mean it isn't good advice. It is. I've got to work with the guy. And, from what I'm told, he went to my boss Friday and said "We've really screwed up", not "Frank's screwing me up". So, that's worth something too.
But, I still get very frustrated.

I often hate it, but find that things often go more smoothly if there is some means for the other party to save "face." They usually know that they've made a mistake, but don't necessarily want to admit it in a public setting....
