My wife and I really want to see that Anglo-Saxon gold horde exhibit that
is at the National Geographic Museum in Washington DC.
Poking around on the internet, I found that we could fly to Baltimore for
$103 for one day.  That’s only an 18 miles north of DC.  We can fly in, go
to the exhibit, maybe see some other museums, and be back home in the
evening.  (OK, night.  I picked the later plane, but we’d still be in
around midnight.)

The problem is, Baltimore is where the godkids live.  Their family isn’t
the best at getting going on time and being places.  With some people I’d
say “what do you expect with two kids?”  But, I’ve known their dad for 30
years and this goes back well before the kids were around.

So, we’re thinking of not telling them.  If things go quickly at the museum
(I don’t think it is very big), we can always drive over and say “surprise!”
I am sorry we don’t see them more.  But, there are times that are better
than other.  Right?

I agree with the rest of the gang - just go and enjoy yourselves without trying to make things overly complicated. At this time of year especially, the simpler you can make things, usually the better! that way, if you can make a surprise visit (or a call 1 hour before you plan to get there visit just in case it isn't a good time to visit for them) it will be a complete bonus and no one will feel stressed or upset if things don't go perfectly smoothly and according to the requisite time-table.
