Museum math
May. 30th, 2011 12:03 pmWhile was buying a pile of books at the Morgan Library Saturday the young women working in the gift shop tried to get me to buy a membership.
“You should really buy a membership here,” one of them said. “Then you’d get free admission.”
“I live 3 hours away and i’d have to visit 7 times to make it pay for itself,” I said. “I don’t think I’m going to make the trip that many times this year.”
“But, you’d get a discount on what you buy here too,” the other young woman said.
“How much of a discount?” I asked.
“10%!”
“So, as the memberships are $75, I need to be buying $750 or more to make it worth it,” I said. “Total it up and lets see.”
“$240,” she said.
“Well, no membership for me,” I said.
They seemed really surprised I didn’t buy one. My theory is a lot of people say “Wow! 10% off!” and buy one.
We are members of 5 different museums, so there are certainly times it is worth it. But, not for one so far away that I don’t get to see very often.
There were things in their shop that would have far exceeded that $750 limit. Mostly these:

But, unless I win the lottery...
